The Union Gospel Mission is a Christian service agency that works to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and educational needs of the economically disadvantaged men, women and children of the Twin Cities. In that ministry, the Union Gospel Mission seeks to fulfill its role as servant to Jesus Christ.

The Union Gospel MissionaEURTMs Food Services serves hundreds of hot, wholesome, and healthy meals each day and tens of thousands more are given away during Thanksgiving. Our food service staff plays an essential role in meeting this need.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cook is responsible for wide range of duties involved with cooking and preparing salad items, hot foods, and/or cold foods, or beverages as appropriate to the position. Clean work areas, washing dishes, equipment, and utensils; set up, and service, and collection of garbage. Operate computer to ensure clients are accounted for at each meal period. Performs other job related duties as needed or assigned by direct supervisor or manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
aEUR¢ Prepare and serve a range of hot and cold food items. May include hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, salads, sandwiches, simple bakery items, beverages and/or other similar food items, as appropriate to the position.
aEUR¢ Follow proper procedures for kitchen safety and safe food handling.
aEUR¢ Convey food and supplies from kitchen to service area.
aEUR¢ Replenishes food, silverware, glassware, dishes, and trays at serving stations.
aEUR¢ Cleans and maintains work areas, including floors, facilities, utensils, and equipment; collects and places garbage in designated containers.
aEUR¢ Wash and sanitize pots, pans, and other serviceware ensuring sanitary handling; organizes and replaces serviceware to appropriate location.
aEUR¢ Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposal of spoiled food. Bring defective supplies/equipment, and/or other unusual conditions to the attention of the supervisor.
aEUR¢ Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by direct supervisor or manager.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED is required. Culinary Arts degree or 1 year or more of cooking experience preferred. The candidate should have the ability to obtain a State of Minnesota Food Handler's Certificate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
aEUR¢ Ability to read and write.
aEUR¢ Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
aEUR¢ Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
aEUR¢ Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
aEUR¢ Knowledge of food service lines set-up and temperature requirements.
aEUR¢ Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
aEUR¢ Must be able to work irregular hours during meals periods and busy times of year.
aEUR¢ Able to support UGMaEURTMs statement of Christian faith and share that faith and knowledge with staff and clients.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
aEUR¢ Work is normally performed in a kitchen environment. Will be exposed to temperature extremes.
aEUR¢ Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds consistently, occasionally lift over 30 pounds.
aEUR¢ Work is in cafeteria environments with exposure to temperature fluctuation, kitchen hazards, and varying conditions.
aEUR¢ Work requires standing for long periods of time and repetitive movements.
aEUR¢ Work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, depth perception, stooping, walking, twisting, carrying, and other physical activities.
aEUR¢ Moderate exposure to physical risk, which require following basic safety precautions.
