Afton Alps, a Vail Resorts company, is seeking a part-time Alpine Ski Racing program Supervisor for our Midwest Snowsports Development League (MSDL) recreational race program. Our Team Afton – Alpine Racing Club (ARC) provides coaching and skill development to approximately 320 athletes aged 7 to teen, in an 11-week program which includes 4 MSDL race weekends at ski areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The successful applicant will provide leadership for the ARC program and its approximately 40 part-time coaches. Working closely with our USSA Head Coach and the Ski and Snowboard School Director, the ARC Program Supervisor will ensure that athletes successfully develop new skills in a safe and fun environment based on the PSIA teaching and USSA athlete development models. The Program Supervisor will take leadership of developing the skills and knowledge of the coaches working in the ARC program. The successful applicant will be a strong advanced skier able to ski safely, in control and demonstrate proper free skiing and race technique on all hills at Afton Alps. The successful applicant will consistently demonstrate and communicate his or her passion for the sport and deliver an exceptional guest experience at all times.

The successful applicant will be the primary point of contact for parents and athletes and will manage all aspects of the guest experience and communication with parents. He/she will also be the primary interface between Afton Alps and other MSDL programs and other departments within Afton Alps. The Program Supervisor will be responsible for organizing all aspects of the ARC program including training hill allocations and organizing race events.

The ARC program runs Saturdays/Sundays and Tuesday evenings for 11 weeks from early December through to the end of February. The Program Supervisor will be expected to be available the majority of the time the program is in session plus a few hours per week handling communications and organizational work as well as a small amount of time pre- and post-season.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
  • Manage all organizational aspects of the ARC program - scheduling and management of instructors, allocating training hill space, organizing race events and providing effective communication of program information to participants and their families and instructors.
  • Work collaboratively with all Afton Alps departments to ensure effective delivery of the ARC program and an optimal guest experience.
  • Identify training needs for ARC instructors and organize delivery of suitable training to staff.
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate corporate policies and procedures to staff. Be a role model for safety and delivering EPIC guest experiences.
  • Uphold the highest levels of guest safety on varied terrain with varying winter weather conditions.
  • Deliver an exceptional guest experience at all times maintaining the highest level of professionalism.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and be willing to assist in a variety of areas/programs within the Ski and Snowboard School as required by the business’ needs. Be willing to coach all ages and abilities of skiers within your capabilities and training.
  • Assist in other support activities of Ski and Snowboard programs as assigned by the Director. Assist with operational responsibilities of Ski and Snowboard programs including but not limited to registration processes, supervision of children at lunch and snack times, upkeep of outdoor teaching areas and cleanliness of facilities
  • Continue to upgrade your own personal skills through involvement in voluntary training opportunities and/or through PSIA/AASI/USSA educational opportunities.


Qualifications:
  • Current PSIA Level 1 certification or higher and USSA Level 100 certification or higher or equivalent from a recognized alpine ski national association - required.
  • A knowledge of current PSIA and USSA skill development techniques - required
  • Must have previous management experience including managing staff and organizing events - required
  • Able to demonstrate ski racing techniques - required
  • Knowledge of alpine ski race course setting standards - required
  • Must be fluent in all aspects of the English language (spoken and written) - required
  • Must have excellent guest service skills - required
  • Must have excellent communication skills - required
  • Must work well in a team - required.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather in winter environment - required
  • Must have sight, speech, and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions - required.
  • At least five years of recent alpine ski race coaching experience - required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs – required
  • Must know and embody the skier responsibility code – required
  • Must ski on contemporary equipment - required
  • Experience working with guests of all ages - preferred
  • Knowledge of local area/resort - preferred
