General Summary

This position is responsible for providing a positive shopping experience through effective merchandise presentation, accurate pricing, appropriate signage and prompt, courteous guest service at all times. This position is responsible for merchandising a department, performing assorted merchandising tasks including truck unloading, markdowns, processing returns and damages, signage, merchandise counts and transfers. Additionally, the position requires cashiering, sacking and wrapping merchandise, shopping cart collection and providing additional Guest services required to properly complete the Guest experience.

Responsibilities


1. Handle Guest inquiries with courtesy and a willingness to always satisfy the Guest. Understand basic Guest inquiries about the location and price of merchandise, sale items, payment methods and related inquiries, and properly communicate responses that are understandable and acceptable by Guests.
2. Acknowledge and pro-actively greet all Guests in a pleasant and courteous manner.
3. Prepare merchandise by opening boxes in the stockroom, removing merchandise and un-wrapping, sorting, ticketing and folding or hanging merchandise as required.
4. Move merchandise from the stockroom to the sales floor. All Sales Associates are responsible for the timely movement of merchandise from the stockroom to the sales floor by utilizing rolling racks, GOH’s and other company authorized equipment.
5. Understand the most effective merchandising concepts and apply them when placing merchandise on the appropriate fixture. Create proper merchandise presentation through daily filling, sizing and straightening of merchandise and fixtures.
6. Accurately complete a number of merchandising tasks on a regular basis including merchandise counts, price changes, clearance markdowns, transfers, returns and damages.
7. Operate cash register. Identify and locate the bar codes on items and correctly scan the codes. When the price code is illegible or missing, cashiers must obtain assistance for price checks and manually enter the price and SKU information. Cashiers reconcile their own cash drawer at the beginning of each shift and may be held responsible for any overages or shortages in accordance with company policy.
8. Process guest payments. Process all forms of guest payments accepted by the store, including cash, checks, gift cards and credit cards and any other form of method of payment authorized by Gordmans. Payment processing duties include counting cash and making change, verifying credit cards and completing credit card receipts, communicating with guests to obtain identification such as driver’s licenses, and verifying and recording guest identification on checks, and obtaining check authorization as required
9. Sack merchandise. Remove store hangers, remove EAS security tags if applicable, neatly fold appropriate items, wrap merchandise when applicable, box merchandise if requested and place merchandise into the proper size sack.
10. Maintain awareness to detect common signs of ticket switching, mis-mated merchandise, shoplifting, theft and other security risks involving guests and associates. Promptly communicate potential problems to store management or loss control.
11. Follow all company policies and procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
12. Conducts business in an ethical and socially responsible manner, exhibits behavior that properly represents Gordmans at all times.
13. Rearrange fixtures required by the needs of the business.
14. Place signs in department or on designated features.
15. Assist guests by carrying purchases outside the store when the Guest purchase dictates assistance.
16. Unload trucks during peak periods or when required by the needs of the business.
17. Retrieve and return shopping carts to designated area as required by business patterns.
18. Perform other related job duties as assigned by store management.
19. Must be at work on a regular and predictable basis or as scheduled. All Management staff and Leads are required to close a minimum of one evening shift per week. They are also required to work one shift per weekend OR both days every other weekend (this is determined by the Store Manager).
20. Open Availability -- When business needs dictate it, Management and Leads must be flexible in terms of working hours and/or work schedule in order to manage the organization’s workflow (this includes nights and weekends).

Education and Qualifications


1. Ability to sufficiently understand the English language in order to communicate with individuals at all levels in the company and with various business contacts outside of the company in an articulate, professional manner. Ability to read price tag information; ability to read guest checks, guest identification and similar written materials.
2. Basic English language writing skills for completion of payment processing, guest checks and void paperwork on void transactions.
3. Basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction, necessary to verify cash register functions and to make proper change from cash payment.
4. Ability to grasp and lift or otherwise move merchandise weighing up to twenty pounds.
5. Sufficient manual dexterity in at least one hand to be able to operate all cash registers and electronic equipment and manually complete paperwork such as recording guest identification on checks.
6. Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect signs of shoplifting or dangerous behavior at a distance of 30 yards and to verify guest identification at a close range. Must be able to distinguish between subtle shades of coloring on merchandise.
7. Ability to stand and continuously perform essential job functions for up to a seven and one-half hour shift, with two fifteen minute breaks and one half hour meal break.
8. Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately with minimal direct supervision within two weeks after beginning work.
9. Has the skill set to execute all functions contained within the Sales Associate Lead Functional Schedule.
10. High school diploma preferred.
11. Two years previous retail experience.
