TITLE: Assistant Grocery Manager BASIC PURPOSE AND FUNCTION: Assists the Grocery Department Manager in directing the operation of the Grocery Department, including supervising and training personnel. Assists in ordering, receiving, storing, pricing, stocking, and merchandising. Directs and controls the operation of the entire store in the absence of the Store Director and the Grocery Department Manager. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Encourages and maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on fast, friendly, courteous customer service. Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques. Handles customer relations. Performs ordering, receiving, storing, pricing, stocking and merchandising duties. Assists Grocery Department Manager in planning, organizing, and directing day-to-day operations of the Grocery Department and Front End functions, including recommendations regarding regular and seasonal merchandise requirements and special sales needs. Assists in implementing Company and Division merchandising policies and/or Store Director instructions. Assists Grocery Department Manager in the scheduling of employees to ensure adequate coverage and service level. Monitors employee performance and recommends personnel action such as hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action. Trains Fourth Person for possible promotion to Third Person. Ensures employees are trained in proper performance of work duties and familiarized with Company policies and regulations. Responsible for the proper accounting of sales, maintenance and storage of cash register detail tapes, and the issuance and pick up of money from checkers. Prepares "things to do list" for night stockers, closes out discontinued items, and implements price changing procedures. Assists in the preparation of the weekly markdown report. Opens and closes the store. Ensures compliance with Company sanitation, safety, security and other policies. Initiates corrective action as needed. Implements emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions. Responsible for the overall operation of the store including supervision of all employees, and the handling of customer complaints, in the absence of the Store Director and the Grocery Manager. May perform duties of the Receiving Clerk in the absence of the Receiving Clerk. Responsible for performing all job duties with honesty and integrity. SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to be friendly, courteous, tactful and maintain composure in dealing with customers and co-workers. Requires good written and oral communication skills, leadership skills and the ability to develop people. Requires the analytical ability to handle administrative details such as planning, reporting, meeting operating objectives, scheduling, supervising and making hiring and disciplinary action decisions. Requires the ability to judge and react to business activity. Requires knowledge of basic math and weights and measures. Must have knowledge of product variety, product location and perishability. Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time. Ability to reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 55 lbs. Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary. Mental alertness is required to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities. Must possess a thorough knowledge of checkstand and scanning procedures. Must be able to effectively operate and train others in the operation of Front End cash registers and/or scanning equipment. Must be able to operate stock ordering equipment. Ability to perform Receiving Clerk's duties as required. Requires the knowledge and ability to implement emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions. Exposure to potential hazards exists with respect to equipment and work aides necessary to perform job duties throughout the Grocery Department. Occasional exposure to approximately -20* Fahrenheit, 28* Fahrenheit, and 35* Fahrenheit, while handling products in the freezer, cooler and display cases. Working conditions consist of a temperature controlled store environment. Occasional exposure to outdoor environment when checking store perimeters and conducting business off the premises. Occasional exposure to backroom receiving area when performing Receiving Clerk's duties.
