POSITION OBJECTIVE

Prepares and serves DPS school meals in accordance with food and safety standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of a variety of foods in accordance with food and safety standards.
  • Washes, cuts, cooks and or re-heats food items, weighing and measuring ingredients, according to recipes and instructions.
  • Sets up serving lines and serves meal or meal components.
  • Communicates with students and school staff when serving food items.
  • Operates cash register, accepting money and making change for food and beverages served.
  • Cleans and sanitizes dishes, kitchen utensils, equipment and facilities in accordance with approved housekeeping and safety practices and guidelines.
  • Operates, cleans and sanitizes kitchen equipment.
  • Stocks and organizes food related items and kitchen supplies in refrigerators, freezers, walk-in coolers, and store room.
  • Follows approved housekeeping and safety practices to ensure that safe conditions are maintained in the kitchen, food-serving areas, and in dining area.
  • Stores food and supplies in accordance with instructions and HACCP.
  • Performs related kitchen and facility related duties (e.g., laundry, general cleaning).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous institutional food service or restaurant experience preferred, but not required.
  • Completion of orientation class within first month of employment required.
  • Completion of food preparation classes provided by the Department of Food and Nutrition Services encouraged.
  • Six-week probationary period working in one kitchen, after which an evaluation will be completed by Lunchroom Manager.
  • Substitute Food Service Worker must score at least Average or higher in all categories to be promoted to Hourly Worker.

KNOWLEDGE & OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work effectively as member of multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral formats.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and other computer software programs. ​

EQUIPMENT & VEHICLES USED

Operates and uses a variety of kitchen equipment (e.g., meat cutter, mixers, ovens, trays, cashier computer, utensils, measuring scales) and cleaning supplies (e.g., laundry, custodial).

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently moves, transports, positions, installs, lifts or removes kitchen items or equipment weighing up to 20 lbs. without assistance; occasionally moves, transports, positions, installs, lifts, pushes, pulls, raises or removes items or equipment weighing more than 20 lbs with assistance (e.g., using equipment or with another person (s) assisting). The employee constantly moves around kitchen work area, reaching, lifting, raising, manipulating, and handling kitchen objects, controls and equipment. Employee frequently keeps pace with, and has stamina to complete scheduled activities and tasks during work shift in order to have food prepared in time for scheduled meal times.

Mental Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to coordinate, problem solve, compare, copy, attend to details of recipes, the employee is occasionally required to compute.

Work Environment:

Work performed in District kitchen environments. Frequently exposed to moderate to high levels of noise, cleaning chemicals and supplies, food preparation scents, kitchen temperature differences (e.g., heat, cold).  Sharp instruments requiring cautionary use at times, exposure to heating surfaces, and burn susceptibility.   May be exposed to extreme cold temperatures working in warehouse or walk-in refrigerated units.  Occasional exposure to hazardous cleaning chemical and materials exist.
