RTI International is seeking field staff for the Survey of Prison Inmates. Field interviewers are responsible for conducting face to face research interviews with inmates at 350 prisons across the country. Interviews will be conducted via computer-assisted personal interview—requiring about 55 minutes per interview.

Position Type and Description

This position is to be filled as a part time job starting at various times depending on the availability of the facility and/or inmates. The data collection period will last for approximately three months. During the data collection period, FI’s will be staying in hotels. This would mean checking in to the hotel on Monday, working Tuesday through Thursday, and checking out of the hotel on Thursday. We are looking for individuals who will be able to work during daytime hours, occasionally evening hours, and rarely weekends. Hired staff who demonstrate excellence during this effort will be considered to be invited back to work on the follow-up wave of data collection for this study.

Major Objectives and Areas of Responsibility
  • Must have a valid ID that can be used to gain access to many prison facilities
  • Must live within the study area
  • Be available to work, on average, 3 days in a given week as work is available
  • Have a valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle or reliable transportation
  • Be willing to travel in varying temperatures and weather conditions
  • Be willing to travel reasonable distances to reach assigned prison facilities
  • Have legible handwriting and meticulous attention to detail
  • Be able to complete, organize, safely store, and ship paperwork in a timely fashion
  • Be able to document and navigate through a tablet
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Be able to adhere to project requirements
  • Have access to wifi
  • Be comfortable working in a prison facility face-to-face with inmates
  • Be able to adapt to various social environments and areas
  • Be flexible in their schedules in order to be available during week with occasional evening hours and rarely weekends
  • Be available and prepared for all scheduled conference calls with your Field Supervisor or any RTI project managers weekly, at a minimum
  • Be able to obtain, safeguard, and submit receipts for all expenses regardless of the amount in order to be compliant with client protocol and to be reimbursed


Training

Field Interviewers will be expected to attend an in–person paid training. Training is scheduled for this SPI is scheduled for January 5-8 or January 12-15 depending on the region assigned, and is located in Raleigh, NC. Attendance at training is mandatory. As some travel may be necessary to get to the training location, travel time and mileage is fully reimbursable. Trainees must successfully complete training to continue employment on the project.

Average Pay Rate is $17.70 and is based on experience and location.
