Night Position--Punch press operators produce parts from metal, plastic or other materials using a punch press, a computer numeric controlled (CNC) piece of equipment that makes precision cuts, grinds and punches into metal, plastic, composite or other material. Punch press operators look at blueprints or plans for the finished product, make adjustments to the machine to control speed, material feed and path of the punch, as well as make sure the machines are set up properly, working well, and producing quality product. They make sure their machines are working at full capacity, are stocked with needed materials, well-maintained and perform periodic checks on output. CNC machines are high precision, and operators use computer controls to make punches and cuts, inputting information into the computer from the blueprints. They must be familiar with computer assisted design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) technology and software.
