OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION: The Distribution Center (DC) Manager is responsible for the safe and cost effective operation of a regional tire and maintenance parts distribution center and internal Over-The-Road fleet. 

 

JOB SUMMARY: The Distribution Center (DC) Manager will perform various management duties including but not limited to, planning, scheduling and directing the day-to-day activities of the DC and transportation fleet.  The DC Manager focuses on safety, customer service, order and inventory accuracy and staff development.  Additionally, the DC Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that drive continuous process improvements that maximize efficiencies and reduce operating costs.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as onsite project manager supporting all start-up activities of a new Distribution Center, including WMS implementation, facility setup and staff development
  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate and coach Distribution Center team members and Fleet drivers
  • Address team member performance issues in an appropriate and timely manner.  Utilize the progressive discipline policy to manage team member issues.  Collaborate with General Manager as necessary to manage team member issues
  • Delegate tasks as needed and follow-up with team members to ensure that tasks are being completed
  • Plan and conduct regular staff meetings to inform, educate and recognize team members as well as provide a forum for exchange of ideas
  • Hands-on execution of all daily operations
  • Facilitate the cost effective flow on goods from receipt through shipment to customers
  • Oversee driver scheduling to assure timely deliveries while controlling labor costs
  • Audit driver logs for accuracy and compliance
  • Promote the highest level of service and communication with our internal and external customers
  • Ensure inventory accuracy is maintained through proper receipt activities, product movements, accurate shipments, cycle counting and facility security procedures 
  • Champion continuous process improvement and implement best practices that drive peak DC performance and customer service
  • Lead DC team in achieving aggressive goals as outlined in Key Performance Indicators of Safety, Customer Service, Inventory Accuracy and Operating Costs
  • Responsible for the financial performance of the DC, including effective payroll management, budgets and P&L statements
  • Serve as onsite Forklift Trainer
  • Manage a collaborative Safety program that promotes team member engagement
  • Maintain a clean, safe and productive work environment while focusing on minimizing work-related injuries, fleet accidents, compliance with OSHA and DOT guidelines and company directives
  • Ensure facility and company assets are properly secured and maintained to ensure operational readiness
  • Execute company policies, procedures and programs in a professional, effective and timely manner

  • Other duties assigned as needed

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Education:
    • HS Diploma or equivalent
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Operations, Transportation, Logistics or Supply Chain or equivalent experience
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of five years’ of proven leadership experience in Distribution, Manufacturing and/or Transportation operations
    • Inventory Control experience with hands-on management of merchandise and supplies
    • Dedicated Fleet Transportation/Logistics experience preferred

SKILLS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Skills:
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and ability to learn new software applications and computer programs.
    • Strong comprehension of integrated business software.  Background in SAP WM preferred.
    • Must be well versed in warehouse and transportation operations
    • Must be strategic and analytical, grasping complex situations and quickly develop plans to deliver results
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate at all levels of the company and able to adjust message according to the audience
    • Proactive and process oriented along with exceptional organizational skills
    • Team player with time management skills, can-do attitude, sense of urgency and strong work ethic

 

  • Typical Physical Demands:
    • Very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching and working from elevated surfaces
    • Frequently lift and/or move over 75 pounds
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator
    • Requires normal range of hearing and vision

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working within a fast paced distribution center and tire retread plant environment where there may be wide temperature variations depending on weather conditions.  While performing duties, the employee is frequently exposed to dirt, dust, rubber smells and debris, cleaning solutions as well as powered material handling equipment and commercial truck traffic.

 

WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to work extended hours, including weekends, based on business needs

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:  Some travel may be required, including but not limited to fleet driver ride along trips
