GENERAL DUTIES:
The Clinical Educator is an experienced professional nurse who utilizes evidence based practice for the
achievement of organizational goals related to nursing education and professional practice. They serve as an
educator, consultant, facilitator, and resource for nursing staff. The Clinical Educator possess in-depth
scientific knowledge, technical expertise, skill, and competence. They utilize a collaborative approach to
communicate among all care providers to optimize the efficiency and efficacy of patient care. In this role, the
Clinical Educator is a change agent and suggests new and innovate approaches that result in sustained quality
improvement.
Reports to Department Director and Manager
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Design, Implementation, Coordination, and Evaluation of Education/Educational Programs
Develops and coordinates new and existing employee orientation programs. Schedules new employees
for required orientation components and monitors their progression.
Creates, reviews, and revises orientation pathways and competencies annually.
Evaluates educational programs for effectiveness and impact. Provides Director/Manager with annual
program evaluation summary.
Creates and provides educational and professional development opportunities that enhance: empirical
outcomes, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, transformational leadership, new
knowledge, innovations, and improvements.
Evaluates and tracks programs and other educational/professional development offerings for sustained
improvement and outcomes.
Performs learning needs assessment (annually and ad hoc). Develops educational programs based on
needs. Provides training reports to assist staff in achieving high completion rates for assigned
departments.
Ensures educational activities are congruent with organizational pillars, mission, vision, value and
goals.
Identifies and develops high-risk, low volume clinical competencies are reviewed annually and as
needed.
Provides didactic classes, self-study modules, and learning opportunities to staff members. Evaluates
on-going needs, competence and post education outcomes.
Creates, maintains, and reviews annually competencies for preceptors and Advanced Clinical Nurses.
Utilizes complex patient care situations to develop staff problem solving and decision making skills.
Leadership and Collaboration
Works with Nursing Directors and Managers to create educational content that meets department
specific needs.
Provides guidance, educational support, and leadership throughout the organization.
Encourages staff to: pursue higher education, certification, obtain ACN, and attend/participate in
professional development activities.
Models behaviors that reflect participation and leadership in activities within the organization, such as
serving in key roles on committees, and councils.
Participates in and supports Versant Program -- Residents and preceptors.
Evaluations - Assists with Resident, preceptor, new hire, and ACN evaluations as needed.
Assumes responsibility for projects and is self-directed in autonomously moving charge forward, while
identifying when guidance and/or assistance is needed.
Quality and Performance Improvement
Shares information with the appropriate individuals regarding necessary changes and/or compliance
concerns. Works collaboratively to develop and implement process changes to achieve compliance.
Monitors performance improvement, creates, implements, measures, and monitors educational plans to
meet performance and quality improvement needs and initiatives.
Provides education that aligns with regulatory, best practice, and evidence based, standards.
Participates in the development, education, and communication of policies and procedures as
appropriate.
Creates and implements training/educational programs focused on identified performance improvement
and organizational initiatives.
Participates in continued survey readiness activities and provides education as appropriate.
Creates and implement education action plans based on survey findings (actual and readiness).
Integrates research into practice and develops staff members' knowledge and skills in the research
process, as well as fosters the use of systematic evaluative research with regard to clinical and
educational data.
Incorporates LEAN methodology into daily practice.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
2. Current unencumbered licensure to practice in the State of California.
3. Minimum 5 years clinical experience in area of expertise.
4. Computer literacy including Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Visio, PowerPoint, and Excel).
5. Exceptional relationship management skills and professional demeanor. Must be regarded as a role
model to elevate nursing, education, and professional practice.
6. Understanding of change management principles. Ability to be a change agent by being a champion for
change and participating in change processes.
7. Proven ability in critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, analytical/quantitative analysis, time
management and priority setting.
8. Demonstrated ability to function both autonomously and collaboratively within a team.
9. Relevant professional organization membership knowledge of adult learning styles, age specific care
needs, and growth development.
10. Understands age-related considerations affecting the patient population.
11. Strong communication and leadership skills.
12. Ability to work flexible hours to meet education needs of all nursing staff (day, night, weekend shifts).
13. Performs other relevant duties as assigned.
14. Maintains current knowledge regarding education and regulatory requirements.
15. Relevant certification in specialty area within 1 year of hire:
ED -- BCEN or other relevant certification
NICU -- ANCC Certification
Pediatrics -- ANCC Certification
Perinatal -- ANCC Certification
Peri-Operative -- ANCC Certification
Critical Care -- ANCC Certification
Telemetry -- ANCC Certification
Medical/Surgical -- ANCC Certification
16. American Heart Association and other (maintain current at all times):
Emergency Department -- Instructor: TNCC, ATCN, and ENPC. ACLS and BLS Certification
NICU -- Instructor: NRP and S.T.A.B.L.E
Pediatrics -- Instructor: PALS
Perinatal -- Instructor: AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor, NRP and ACLS-OB Instructor. BLS
Certification
Telemetry, Critical Care, Emergency Department, Peri-Operative -- Instructor: BLS and ACLS
Medical/Surgical -- Instructor: BLS
17. NICU and Peds is a shared educator roll that requires CNS certification and knowledge of CCS
(California Children's Services) standards.
18. Critical Care educator will also provide education for Interventional Radiology and Cath Lab.
19. Peri-op educator will also provide education for the GI Lab.
Preferred:
Master's Degree in Nursing or MSN-Ed
