About this job

Responsibilities* - Assists with administrative team functions with animal care supervisor.

- Performs tasks in rooms that require additional training and high skill level of animal care and facility knowledge such as hazard containment, immune compromised housing, and advanced breeding techniques.

- Serves as project lead on internal animal transfer and other husbandry support programs.

- Packages and organizes tissue samples for shipment to internal or external laboratories

- Assists Veterinary Technician staff in routine animal treatments and reports

- Serves as departmental liaison to external customers requesting additional assistance

- Provides facility orientation and training to internal and external customers.

- This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and the handling of materials which at times weigh as much as 50 pounds.

- Final candidates will be asked to demonstrate their ability to perform certain aspects of the job.

Required Qualifications* -Bachelor's degree with specialization in animal science or a related field or equivalent education and experience or a degree in veterinary technology

- Certification of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science - Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT)

- Minimum of 3 years' experience working in a laboratory animal setting either in direct care, supportive care or research.

- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers.

- Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting.

- Must be able to push and pull equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

- Must be able to work at a level of 8" above the floor and up to 6' to 7' above the floor.

- Must be able to perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time.

- Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.

Desired Qualifications* - Advanced knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities.

- Advanced knowledge of animal research and breeding procedures and practices.

- Some knowledge of the principles of medical asepsis.

- Since we are predominantly a rodent facility, any experience dealing with rodents is highly desirable. Hands-on experience with farm animals, pet shops, zoos, animal rehabilitation centers, science or animal-related course work, etc.

Work Schedule - Monday through Friday, with some weekends and holidays required.
