Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a 100-bed freestanding hospital offering acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults 18 years and older. The hospital is accessible 24 hours a day for admissions, and includes mental health assessments and referral network. Treatment programs and specialty services at VBPC include substance abuse, dual diagnosis/rapid stabilization, geriatric psychiatric and partial hospitalization.

Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center currently has a (Mental Health Counselor Positions - Full-Time and PRN Night) . Must be able to work weekends and holidays. The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

Serves as an active member of the clinical staff maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients assists in maintenance of a safe, clean therapeutic environment assures patient participation in program activities and assists in maintenance of patient health and safety.

Performs technical/patient care duties.

Interacts with patients, patient families, clinical team, and community resources establishing relationships and providing positive customer service.

Assess and interacts with all patients in accordance with the Master Treatment Plan and the therapeutic process with consideration to age, cultural values and religious beliefs.

Performs technical nursing assignments (taking vital signs, weights, laboratory specimens, and EKG's)

Exercises appropriate intervention in accordance with least restrictive alternative to protect patients from harming self or others and demonstrate sound clinical judgment and communication skills for managing out-of-control behavior.

Facilitates community meetings and educational groups.

Maintains professional standards and boundaries with patients. Demonstrates therapeutic patient/staff communication.

Maintains clean, safe, therapeutic environment.

Transports and accompanies patients on van, to and from the hospital or appointments when necessary.

Documents patient progress in relation to the Master Treatment Plan and adheres to proper mechanics of charting by demonstrating accuracy, timeliness, neatness, and legibility of documenting patient behavior, symptoms, interventions, patient response, and plan for treatment according to policy.

Participates in team meetings and development and implementation of treatment plans.

The following are the job requirements for the (Mental Health Counselor - Full-Time and PRN Night) positions:

Requires undergraduate degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Counseling or in a related behavioral science field and one year of experience working with adult psychiatric and chemical dependency patients. Must possess knowledge of therapeutic relationships, therapeutic processes, growth and development, limit setting and behavior management.
