Position Title: Juvenile Justice Detention Officer I

Biweekly starting salary: $979.97 minimum (All applicants are hired at the minimum).

SPECIAL NOTES:

DJJ participates in E-Verify (Employment Eligibility).

When identified on a position description, a valid driver's license is required. If initially hired with an out-of-state license, the Florida resident must obtain a valid Florida state driver's license within 30 days of hire. Licenses suspended or revoked for any reason, work permits (Business purpose/Employment/education only licenses) and some types of restricted licenses are not acceptable. Licenses that have Corrective Lenses Restriction are acceptable, provided the driver wears corrective lenses while operating the vehicle.

Positions that include the transportation of youth while performing any work or work-related functions on behalf of DJJ, require: (1) a valid driver's license; and (2) a three year acceptable driving record as defined in FDJJ Policy 1920.

Successful candidate must be certified in accordance with the Department direct care training policy, and must obtain such certification within 180 days of employment.

Juvenile Justice Officers will be required to perform shift work, due to 24 hours facility operations Applicants must be willing to work a flex schedule including nights, weekends and holidays. Extended hours may also be required.

For those applicants not currently in the state system as a direct-care worker for DJJ at the time of application, take and pass an Ergometrics IMPACT Assessment and Training Test in order to be considered for the direct-care employment opportunity. This test will be used to measure the applicant's overall suitability for working with juvenile justice involved youth. Test results will be used for a period of six months after initial testing for applicants who reapply during that period for another position for which testing is required.

985.66 FLORIDA STATUTES REQUIREMENT:

Be at least 19 years of age. Be a high school graduate or its equivalent as determined by the commission.

Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person, who after September 30, 1999, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement is not eligible for employment, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication. Notwithstanding this subparagraph, any person who pled nolo contendere to a misdemeanor involving a false statement before October 1, 1999, and who has had such record of that plea sealed or expunged is not ineligible for employment for that reason.

Abide by all provisions of s. 985.644 (1), regarding fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel.

Execute and submit to the Department an affidavit-of-application form, adopted by the Department, attesting to his or her compliance with subparagraphs 1-4. The affidavit must be executed under oath and constitutes an official statement under s. 837.06. The affidavit must include conspicuous language that the intentional false execution of the affidavit constitutes a misdemeanor of the second degree. The Department shall retain the affidavit.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for adhering to agency or facility policies or procedures. Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, themselves and other staff. This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all the duties in the optimum responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for staff, youth, and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect.

Attends required meetings.

Provides constant supervision, control and observation of youth, while maintaining an environment that is safe and creates an atmosphere that has "zero tolerance" for youth escapes, youth absence, sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct by the staff with youth (Red Flag Behavior).

Completes required reports timely and accurately.

Ensures the safe and secure custody of all assigned youth, while ensuring that all youth are provided their constitutional rights with special concern for their legal, medical and mental health issues. Uses security and medical equipment to ensure the safety and security of the youth and the facility.

Performs the function of master control operator and transports youth as needed.

Processes admissions, which includes supervising and searching youth.

Initiates and maintains youth counts as directed by departmental and facility operating procedures and policies.

Prepares youth for court appearances, and transports and escorts youth to medical, criminal justice, social services and judicial facilities as needed according to departmental and facility policies and procedures.

Inspects facility, youth, visitors and packages delivered to the facility, as well as conducts searches related to safety and security to include, but not limited to, vehicles, facilities, property and persons for contraband, health hazards, safety and security violations.

Writes reports and prepares required records regarding incidents, youth movement and noteworthy information, and ensures the documentation of all violations of facility operating procedures, departmental procedures, rules and regulations, and state and federal statutes.

Ensures the inspection and maintenance of sanitary conditions of the facility. Instructs the youth in housekeeping, sanitation responsibilities and personal hygiene.

Ensures youth services and programming are in compliance with DJJ and court orders, regulations, departmental policies and procedures and Quality Assurance Standards.

Accesses and analyzes information available through the Juvenile Justice Information System.

Follows policies and procedures for the safety and security of youth, staff and the public.

Completes 10- minute checks, 5- minute checks, or Constant Sight and Uninterrupted Sound Supervision for every youth confined to room confinement or designated as suicidal.

Assesses and analyzes information available through the Juvenile Justice Information System.

Supervises youth in all activities and maintains control of youth by giving directives, counseling and/or utilizing appropriate levels of verbal or physical use of Protective Action Response (PAR) as needed to properly control youth in accordance with departmental and facility policies and procedures.

Attends and successfully completes all training required by DJJ's Direct Care Training Policy and other training as assigned and required. In case of an emergency, will utilize Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillators (AED), and First Aid techniques and procedures taught during certification training.

Maintains a valid Driver License and reports any change to his/her supervisor within 72 hours. Will not knowingly drive a state vehicle or use a private vehicle on state business if his/her license is revoked, suspended, or given any curtailment of use.

Performs other related duties.

This position works on a non-traditional schedule and may be required to work various shifts based on the needs of the facility.

This position must comply with the requirements set forth Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, Prompt Payment Compliance Law.
