About this job

Responsibilities* A. Patient Care

1.Utilizes the nursing process, assess patients physical, psychosocial, educational needs; takes appropriate action and documents. Provides patient care for patients varying in age from neonates to geriatric, addressing potential for lack of knowledge, anxiety, skin impairment, injury and for pain/discomfort due to their underlying disease or the procedure performed.

2.Provides sedation/analgesia to and monitor the patients undergoing Interventional Radiological Procedures per UMHS policy.

3.Recognizes patients /families needs, makes referrals and contacts the appropriate internal departments.

4.Provides nursing care to the patients undergoing special procedures.

5.Demonstrates competencies in Radiological Procedures.

6.Assists radiologist and technical staff in performing diagnostic and interventional procedures and carries out orders.

7.Works collaboratively with other health care members to provide continuity of patients and family care. Treats each individual with courtesy and respect.

8.Provides support to patients/families through utilization of both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques appropriate to the age and physical condition of patients. Strive to provide a positive and caring experience with every interaction. Attitude should reflect UM Health Systems commitment to excellence. Continually looks for ways to improve service for all internal and external customers.

9.Prioritizes and provides appropriate patient care in an organized, efficient, professional and timely manner.

10.Identifies emergency situations, initiates nursing actions and seeks assistance.

11.Reports incidents, problems or concerns in a timely fashion utilizing appropriate communication channels.

12.Provides for safety of self, patient and others by adherence to hospital and unit guidelines, policies and practice.

14.Patient Education

a.Teaches patient and significant others about their disease process and how it relates to radiologic procedures.

b.Teaches patients and significant others methods and techniques of self care.

c.Relates therapeutic plan to patient/significant others to attain optimal health and prevent disease.

15. Fosters a culture of patient and family centered care by creating a positive and caring experience with every interaction. Recognizes internal and external customers and continually looks for ways to improve service for internal and external customers.

16.Acts as an advocate for the patient/family in interactions with health care services.

17.Provides verbal and/or written patient care reports to the receiving unit, via fax and page.

B. Education

1.Serves as a resource for nursing, technical and medical staff by sharing skills and knowledge related to the radiological procedures.

2.May assist in providing appropriate learning experiences for students and others assigned to the area.

3.Maintains awareness of current related nursing issues and shares information through formal and informal mechanisms.

4. Provides customers with the information that they need and/or request.

C. Quality Assurance/Research

1.Participates in research studies and quality assurance activities as requested.

2.Identifies areas needing improvement, recommends changes in collaboration with quality assurance team.

3.Makes changes in own practice based on quality improvement or research recommendations.

D. Management of Units

1.Participates with other health care team members to problem solve related to the management of the clinical area.

2.Collaborates with lead technologist and clerk in coordinating patient flow.

3.Helps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff. Checks and maintains emergency equipment.

4.Participates in area nursing staff meetings and health team activities for problem identification, problem solving and operational planning. Implements appropriate interventions. Participates on nursing committees as assigned.

5.Assists with ordering and monitoring drugs for the division and in the preparation, and maintenance of the special procedure tray and equipment for the division as needed.

6.Participates in the Professional Practice Model in the Radiology Department.

7.Functions as a team leader in the specialty division.

E. Clinical Leadership

1.Provides clinical leadership through professional role modeling.

2.Demonstrates professional relationships with managers, health care team members, patients, significant others and visitors.

3.Respects the patients right to confidentiality.

F. Professional Development

1.Pursues continuing education through conferences, seminars, inservices,staff development programs and mandatory programs.

2.Develops own performance plan/development plan consistent with the goals of Radiology Department. Evaluates performance periodically with Nursing Manager.

Nursing Specific Info Salary & Nursing Framework Level:

This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.

Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level E.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Required Qualifications* Current license to practice nursing in the State of Michigan is required. Five (5) yrs. RN experience Two (2) or more years of Adult or Pediatric ICU, ED, or interventional radiology setting within the past five (5) years. Demonstrates integrations of a culture of Patient Family Centered Care. Demonstrates effective communication and problem solving skills, ability to work collaboratively with others, excellence in Interpersonal skills.and delegation skills. ACLS certification is required within six (6) months of date of hire is required. This position routinely involves:

* Constant standing, walking, transporting of equipment,

Patient lifting, positioning, pushing, twisting, and/or transferring of patients.

* Remaining in a stationary position and moving for extended periods of time

* Moving of equipment and moving and/or transferring of patients

* Wearing a lead apron (approx. 20-25 lbs) for several hours at a time

* Inspection & monitoring of patients from at least 20 feet

*Monitoring IV solutions, including drip rates, syringe and solution pumps up to 20 feet (and in low light situations)

*Providing patient care in low light/dark rooms during radiographic procedures

*Pushing stretchers with patients returning them to the inpatient room as needed

*Using the Omnicell medication system

*Retrieving, drawing up, and administering medications in accordance with organizational policy

*Management of blood product transfusions, including associated paper documentation.

*Using computerized data entry and medical record systems

*Communication with team members and department staff using electronic, paper, and dry erase white boards.

Work Schedule Hours: 32 hrs/wk,

Shift: Day/Evening shift; 8, 10 and 12 hour shifts with the potential to cover weekends.

On call per department requirements including nights, weekends, and holidays
