Overview

Responsible for a variety of non-dispensing, order entry and IV Admixture duties in the Pharmacy. Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, the technician is responsible for computer order entry, preparation and distribution of intravenous solutions, admixtures, u/d packing, u/d preparation, cleaning, ordering, technical management of technology, stocking medications and related products. Performs related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities

Fills prescription and drug orders

a. Able to read label correctly, identify drug names, different strengths and different packaging.

b. Differentiates between look alike and sound alike drug names

c. Comprehends drug orders

d. Performs basic compounding skills under pharmacists' supervision

e. Familiar with and properly employs aseptic technique

Maintains inventory in Omnicell

a. Correct items in correct places using safety scan for verification

b. Clears return bins

c. Ability to add narcotics correctly

d. Restocking and maintaining par levels

e. Handling discrepancies properly

f. Follows Omnicell Policy and Procedure

Process return medication

a. Knows and follows the process for IV and UD returns

b. Returns items correctly to the Omnicell Central

c. Returns items to manufacturer when necessary with proper paperwork

d. Completes proper paper work and for control substances

e. Understands the importance of processing credits in a timely manor.

Distribution of medication.

a. Distributes STAT and non-stat medication and other items to patient care units

b. Recognizes the importance of STAT medications to the patients welfare

c. Medication deliveries completed accurately and promptly

d. Has knowledge of pneumatic tube system

e. Familiar with layout of facility

f. Picks up returns from units

Maintains proper record keeping

a. Completes records accurately (delivery, compounding, pt. own med, chemo, etc....)

b. Know location of where to file appropriate paperwork

Communication Skills

a. Promptly answers telephone and resolves problems or refers to appropriate individuals for resolution

b. Takes accurate, adequate information and assists when possible with telephone inquiries prior to transferring to a pharmacist or supervisor

c. Always courteous, helpful, and demonstrates proper phone etiquette and communication skills with customers.

Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation

a. Arrives promptly and ready to go at scheduled time at work station on the days you are assigned to work

b. Completes specific job duties of assigned daily position in a through and accurate manner

c. Is able to perform duties outside direct supervision

d. Familiar with "big picture" to recognize priorities

Maintains high alert medications

a. Knowledge of the criteria for identification of the high alert medications

b. Knowledge of how to properly handle any high alert medications

Product Inventory

a. Communicate any high-use and stock outs to appropriate party

b. Maintain proper inventory quantity and order proper amounts

c. Cleans and stocks

a. Ensures that identified problems and issues of concern are resolved or referred to appropriate parties in a timely manner

Qualifications:

Qualifications

Education: Must be at least 16 years old.

Licensure: Actively registered, in good standing, with the Missouri Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician or willing to submit application for registration by first day of work. This includes submitting fingerprints for FBI background check.

Experience: Prefer previous work experience as Pharmacy Technician, or have prior pharmacy or healthcare experience.

Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Strong background in fractions, proportions and percentages. Must possess a high degree of manual dexterity and be able to work accurately and quickly under pressure. Must be able to follow precise instructions with attention to detail. Must possess reasonable keyboarding skills. A caring, friendly and professional approach is expected in all communication with patients, families, visitors and other employees. Must be flexible to adjust to changing conditions or details of the job and different shifts or positions as required. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift moderately heavy objects and stand for long periods of time. Physical demands are attached plus push/pull up to 25# each, and grip up to 50 lbs., pinch up to 15 lbs., kneel, crouch, and crawl minimally.

Preferred Licensure: Internal or national technician certification, preferred at or within 12 months of hire or promotion.
