Worthington Industries Summer Internship Program

 

The Worthington Industries Summer Internship Program is designed to help our interns develop professional skills through on-the-job experience. During the 12-week program, interns will spend 80 percent of their time completing a business-driven project. These assignments could range from generating ideas for product improvement, to creating new processes, to developing a standardized playbook for a specific role within the Company.

 

The interns will spend the remainder of their time receiving additional on-the-job experience and classroom learning. Classes will feature topics from general business etiquette, to resume writing, interviewing and presenting with confidence. In keeping with Our Philosophy, the program will also feature a community service component.

 

Worthington Industries is looking for a Learning and Development intern to participate in the program.

 Position Description

The Learning & Organizational Development Specialist is a key contributor to providing effective, value-added learning and developmental opportunities at both the departmental and enterprise-wide level and is responsible for participating in the creation and advancement of new strategies to develop the highest level of workforce performance and leadership capabilities in all Worthington Industries professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Integrate efforts with and provide expert contribution to the Learning & Development team with:

  • Participate in and/or lead various L&D/OD initiatives, such as the creation & implementation of the Leadership Academy, instituting and overseeing internship programs, employee engagement programs, perpetuating Our Philosophy, creation and management of talent acquisition and talent development programs.
  • Consult with Business Unit Leaders and HR Leadership to understand needs and assess/evaluate current learning material.
  • Design, develop and evaluate instructional programs, materials, methods, employee support systems, teaching and assessment techniques, and the construction of evaluation methods to promote effective training and level four learning.
  • Assist in the improvement of the instructional development process, setting standards for assisting the L&D team in the design curriculum and instruction, development of learning resources, and retooling of courses and course segments.
  • Ensure training sessions are of highest quality (content, delivery, materials) and align with the Worthington’s current business strategies and initiatives.
  • Partner in the development of key metrics to track and improve L&D/Talent Development programs to demonstrate effectiveness and better serve the business.
  • Apply and modify various instructional design models and instructional system components to develop thorough instructional and learning systems and environments.
  • Leverage a variety of learning technologies to ensure effective and efficient program delivery including LMS, wikis, blogs, and social media.
  • Constant and consistent advocating of Our Philosophy and modeling the behaviors by which it is demonstrated.
  • Support the process of developing and implementing continuous and sustained improvement processes.
  • Effectively use consulting and influencing skills to develop valued relationships with key stakeholders and internal customers.
  • Contribute to the ongoing expansion and development of processes and toolkits.
  • Participate in group, local office, and national training, recruiting, and networking events.
  • Miscellaneous projects and duties as required.
Experience

Three to five years of developing and delivering instructor-led and e-learning/online education using a variety of development tools in a corporate setting.

Education

Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience required. Information Design, Education, Instructional Design, Organizational Development or similar area of study preferred.

Qualities/abilities
  • Accomplished presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and practices to include: instructional systems design, curriculum design, performance improvement, performance support systems, adult learning theories, interactive technologies and eLearning design principles, distance learning, self-paced instruction, evaluation methodologies.
  • Ability to identify problems and break down complex concepts and processes into component parts to be taught.
  • Ability to influence, persuade and obtain buy-in from key stakeholders.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work closely with a diverse group of subject matter experts and effectively communicate with team members re: project status, issues and/or concerns.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills, flexible to changing demands.
  • Experience developing technical content a plus.
  • Experience in leadership development programs and materials a plus.
  • Experience in sales skill development programs and materials a plus.
  • Experience in Lean development programs and materials a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as needed by the assignment.
Technology
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Visio, Project, SharePoint).
  • Experience working with Content Creations Systems and Learning Management Systems (LMS) a plus.
  • Experience with design and media development tools preferred, such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks, Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Captivate.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (JDE, Oracle, etc.)
