Summary of Job:

Hotels and catering services utilize banquet servers as roaming, non-standard waiters and waitresses. In a typical restaurant setting, the wait staff will have tables they are assigned to cover, but banquet servers are responsible for accommodating all guests at a function while circulating the room. Anticipating the needs of the guests and responding politely to their requests are commonly required tasks.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Event set up, including putting out tablecloths and place settings, arranging table placement, and assembling a buffet
  • Carrying trays, serving guests and cleaning up at the event's conclusion
  • A banquet server's duties during the event can vary based on the situation, but, in general, they must be able to focus on the job while staying on their feet and moving about freely, which can include bending, climbing stairs and carrying items weighing 25-50 pounds.
  • Good communication is important, as is being able to follow directions efficiently and meeting the physical demands of the job. A positive attitude on the job is also essential.
  • Banquet servers must adhere to health and safety standards at all times, even when closing down at the end of the event, which may include breaking down the table set up and taking tablecloths and linens to the laundry.

Qualifications:

  • Must have schedule flexibility for both AM/PM shifts, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to learn quickly and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Must possess a true desire to satisfy the needs of others and display superior customer service
  • Note that in some states, a banquet server must be 21 to serve alcoholic beverages
  • High school diploma or GED certificate required in some instances
  • Customer service or server experience is preferable
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must meet company and hotel grooming standards
  • Ability to perform all duties as instructed in training and by supervisor
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and move moderate distances
  • Must be able to carry heavy trays of food, dishes, and glassware
  • Must wear safety shoes to avoid slips and falls
  • Must be able to work under pressure to serve customers quickly and efficiently
