ARNP or PA-C -- Critical Care Specialists

General Summary

Serves as a member of the Critical Care Specialists team by assisting in management of critically ill patients in the hospital. Applies specialized skills and knowledge related to ICU settings in which they practice. Contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting and provides leadership to the organization. Able and willing to travel to multiple Florida Hospital Campuses: Altamonte, Orlando, Kissimmee, Celebration, East Orlando, Waterman (Lake County).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provides direct clinical services for critically ill adult patients within institutional guidelines, utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the patient's physician.

1. Obtains patient health histories and complete physical examinations and documents findings in accordance with hospital requirements.

2. Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, explaining the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, patient's family, staff and healthcare learners.

3. Performs approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient's clinical status and documents procedures in accordance with hospital requirements, including obtaining arterial, venous, and capillary blood samples, urine samples, sputum samples and cultures; performing cardiac output measurements, other hemodynamic measurements and EKG's; assisting with the performance of radiographic studies; assisting physician with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; etc.

4. Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and external cardiac massage; airway management including bag and mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and extubation, changing, positioning and repositioning endotracheal tubes; directing administration of life supporting drugs according to established protocols; and defibrillation according to Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards.

5. Under physician direction and within the credentialing standards of the Hospital, inserts and manages arterial catheters, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, temporary pacemakers, and other procedures commensurate with an ICU environment.

6. Interfaces patients with monitoring and instrumentation equipment, and directs and educates others in performing the same functions.

7. Formulates and implements a treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated primary supervising physician and/or attending back-up physician(s) and documents in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.

8. Assesses patients for changes in status and institutes appropriate interventions, including initiation of necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.

9. Responds to and leads interventions in Code Blue and Rapid Response emergencies.

10. Admits and discharges patients under supervision of physician.

11. Provides family-centered care by communicating with the family regarding the changing health care needs of their family member.

12. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.

13. Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.

14. Supports IRB approved clinical research/trials though a variety of activities including but not limited to: obtaining consent; ordering diagnostic tests; recording laboratory & diagnostic results; administering therapeutic interventions; and documenting and reporting patient outcomes including toxicities or adverse events.

15. Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.

16. Serves as a clinical expert and education consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team and to the larger community.

17. Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.

18. Identifies educational needs of the family and participates in teaching opportunities.

19. Assesses educational needs, plan, provide, and evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary healthcare team, and community.

20. Precepts new PA/NP's and healthcare learners.

21. Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.

22. Able and willing to travel to multiple Florida Hospital Campuses: Altamonte, Orlando, Kissimmee, Celebration, East Orlando, Waterman (Lake County)

23. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

1. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificate.

2. Be Credentialed, or undergo proctoring and training, followed by successful Credentialing, on the following procedural skills:

a. Arterial line insertion

b. Central line insertion

c. Airway management

3. Ability to provide in-hospital coverage on a rotating shift basis. The shifts will include days, nights and weekends

4. Must be able to work night shifts at Florida Hospital Kissimmee and Florida Hospital Celebration Health -- remove for Rob Kirk's replacement and other open shift at Orlando

5. Fundamentals in Critical Care Support Course. Sponsored by The Society of Critical Care Medicine. Strongly recommended

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, physicians, patients and the public

7. Strong communication skills

8. Applicants must pass a third party background check and pre-employment drug screen

Required Education/Experience:

Master's degree in Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant studies with a focus on Acute Care training

Preferred Education/Experience:

Critical Care or ICU experience strongly preferred as an ARNP or PA-C

Strong Critical Care and/or ICU RN experience recommended

Credentialed, or in training for, the following procedure skills desired:

Pulmonary artery catheter insertion

Temporary pacemaker placement

Licensure, Certification, and Registration:

Current, valid Florida ARNP or PA-C license (or eligibility)

Certification by ANCC (ACNP-BC), NCCPA or other nationally recognized accreditation organization
