Aearo Technologies LLC, a 3M Company, is seeking a Laboratory Technologist for the New Product Development Lab located in Indianapolis, IN. Aearo is a wholly owned 3M subsidiary, in the Aircraft and Commercial Transportation Division, which is within the Industrial Business Group in 3M

Job Summary :

The person hired for the position of Laboratory Technologist will primarily be responsible for providing support toward the development of new products to address noise and vibration control needs within the Aerospace and Commercial Transportation markets. This is an exciting position working in a vibrant technical environment. This position requires an individual with strong chemistry and engineering skills who is a good decision maker with the ability to collect data and systematically develop cause and effect relationships. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of polymer chemistry, how to compound for desired mechanical and rheological properties, and how these properties affects noise and vibration responses within complex mechanical structures. Product development activities will take place primarily in technical laboratories in the Indianapolis facility, but does require interface with our manufacturing sites, our parent organization laboratories in St. Paul, MN, and key customers.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Design polymer systems and compounds using an understanding of base polymer and ingredient selection and how these choices affects compound properties

- Formulate, mix, mold, or otherwise prepare samples for evaluation

- Follow detailed and prescriptive test methods to determine physical, chemical, and material properties of new or existing products

- Assist in the development and implementation of new compounding, processing and/or testing techniques as needed

- Utilize Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Vibrating Beam Techniques (VBT) to evaluate damping performance of developmental products

- Accurately note, interpret, report, and present scientific findings

- Work directly with customers and vendors to develop workable solution to technical problems

Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree or higher in a Science or Engineering discipline from an accredited university

- Minimum one (1) year of experience with polymer compound development that includes sample preparation and testing (an Internship or Co-op is considered qualifying)

Preferred Qualifications:

- Possess or in the last year of pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university

- Experience with polymer compounding equipment including balances, mixers, mills, extruders, molds, ovens and presses

- Experience with polymer testing equipment including physical test machines to measure stress and strain relationships, spectrometers, thermal test machines, environmental chambers, ovens, etc.

- Experience with polymer compounding to manipulate glass transition temperature and corresponding material damping properties

- Demonstrated expertise in dynamic mechanical testing, including operation and method development for torsional and sheer rheology measurement techniques

- Competency in vibrational analysis, especially with Oberst bar and long bar techniques

- Proven development of laboratory testing devices, with familiarity of basic electronics including data collection, signal processing and noise reduction

- Familiarity with Underwriter's Laboratories (UL), Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR), Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), flammability testing and compounding techniques and chemistries to meet these standards

- Familiarity with light-weighting, foaming and other density reducing polymer compounding techniques

- Experience formulating thermoplastic, thermoset, and Thermal Plastic Vulcanizate (TPV) compounds

- Experience with thermal measurements and analysis techniques including Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), and Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEC)
