UnitedHealthcare Clinical Services conducts inpatient bed day review for UnitedHealth Group's clients. These include local and national commercial employers, Medicare and state Medicaid plans. UnitedHealthcare’s Inpatient Care Management Medical Directors work with groups of nurses and support staff to manage inpatient care utilization at a hospital, market, regional or national level. Nurses may work telephonically (either work at home or in a large regional center) or actually go onsite at specific hospitals. UnitedHealth Care's care management approach is very data driven, and is grounded in the use and application of evidence based medicine (EBM) such as the MCGTM Guidelines. The successful ICM medical director appreciates and understands data. In addition, he or she is a champion of and is very conversant with EBM, and uses it to teach and direct clinical staff, as well as engage practicing physicians in discussions designed to promote individual patients receiving the right care, in the right place at the right time. Through daily support of the UnitedHealthcare Clinical Services nurses, the medical director serves as a primary clinical educator and mentor, and facilitates achievement of appropriate patient care goals through guiding nurses in the job they do and conducting peer-to-peer communication with practicing physicians. ICM Medical Director's chair periodic market oversight meetings with the outward facing Market Medical Directors, network contractors, nurse management and other internal lay managers. The goal is to use market knowledge as well as UnitedHealthcare’s robust quality and utilization data to identify and address market and hospital specific relationship issues and practice habit opportunities to better advance the practice of EBM. Although the United Health Services ICM medical director's work is typically concentrated in a region, he or she is part of a national organization and team, and collaborates with peers, nurse managers, and non-clinical employees from across the country. In response to customer need and expectation, UnitedHealthcare is continuously modifying its programs and approaches. Although not a primary job function, medical directors with the interest in doing so often have the opportunity to be involved with change design and management. Requirements


Required Qualifications:
 
-MD or DO degree -Active, unrestricted Texas Medical license -Board Certified in an ABMS or AOBMS specialty -5+ years clinical practice experience -Intermediate or higher level of proficiency with managed care -2+ years Quality Management experience
