Overview
The Medical Laboratory Technician II is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. The Medical Laboratory Technician II evaluates and reports test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician II will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions.

* Demonstrates stewardship of resources in regards to inventory, time management, and meeting productivity standards
Operational Effectiveness
o Performs the full range of testing and reporting according to department policies and procedures as required
o Accurately performs and records quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance
o Organizes, prioritizes and completes work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations
o Consults appropriate personnel regarding problems or unexpected test results, in a timely manner
Documents and communicates to appropriate stakeholders
Completes incidence reports as necessary
o Performs the acquisition, labeling, and transfer of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing: utilizing accurate, effective, professional, and confidential accepted methodologies as required
o Performs all tasks associated with processing, transfer and referral of required laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and departmental policies as required
o Remains current in department policies and procedures
o Communicates professionally and effectively with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, vendors and the public
o Demonstrates appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, internet, etc.)
Workplace Excellence
o Complies with laboratory management requests to meet staffing plans and department needs
o Demonstrates initiative to assist the laboratory in all areas
o Works collaboratively with all co-workers to accomplish laboratory, department, or hospital goals
o Attends departmental, laboratory and hospital meetings as required
o Participates in the training of coworkers as requested
o Monitors and helps maintain inventory of reagents and supplies
Quality
o Reviews and evaluates quality control in consultation with appropriate personnel and in accordance with quality plan
Documents findings and implements corrective action
o Demonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility
o Reviews, evaluates and correlates laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures
o Communicates and documents critical information according to policies and procedures
o Recognizes, identifies and consults with appropriate personnel concerning opportunities for process improvement
o Ensures quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing
o Participates in proficiency testing
o Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements
o Complies with all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures
o Complies with all accreditation standards
o Participates in collection of process improvement data
o Demonstrates less than 3 errors, resulting in chart revision, in a continuous 12 month period
Continuing Education
a. Accumulates a minimum of 11 CEU per year
i. Accepted CEU
1. Educational programs such webinars, on-line education, conferences, classes, etc.
a. Programs must be related to medical laboratory science or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital
b. A certificate of attendance or other documentation of completion is required
2. Other developmental opportunities
Must be approved by laboratory management prior to commencement
Laboratory management will determine CEU award
b. Completes mandatory courses on time
Qualifications:
Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in major acceptable for a certification agency requirements
Licensure:
Experience: Up to two years acceptable clinical laboratory experience as a certified MLT or equivalent or certification eligible new MLT graduate
Certifications: 1. Current certification as medical laboratory technician through the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent a. If ASCP certification was achieved after January 1, 2004, continuing certification maintenance must be documented to insure continuous and current certification b. Certification eligible individuals must achieve certification within 6 months of hite
