The Surgical Tech I works under the supervision of the physician/RN and reports to the Director/Manager and is responsible to coordinate all supplies and instrumentation needed to perform the surgical procedure according to established policies and procedures. In addition, the Surgical Tech I is responsible for the disposition and/or decontamination of instruments/supplies in the OR area. The Surgical Tech I will assist the RN with patient care planning, interventions and outcomes.

Assistance is provided by using the appropriate policy, protocols, standards of practice within the scope of practice. Anticipates needs, selecting equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner. Performs pre operative equipment checks. Recognizes limitations, and seeking additional assistance if necessary.

The Plan of Care is supported by working collaboratively to achieve goals and outcomes. Reports pertinent information to staff and physicians and collaboration with the healthcare team to plan/provide patient care as evidenced by documentation.

Documentation is provided by identifying problems associated with surgical techniques, equipment and supplies. Ensures that the information is legible, concise, accurate, objective and timely, while meeting hospital standards.

Leadership is provided by directing and coordinating assignments and care given by team members based on staff competencies, experience and scope of responsibility. Participates in the PI process and identifying opportunities to improve patient care delivery, including collecting data, monitoring and implementing changes.

Enhances the learning opportunities to other staff, and by effectively contributing to the orientation of team members and students.

Provides input and continually updates care plan for each assigned patient that outline specific goals by assisting the Registered Nurse assigned to the case the instrumentation, supplies and equipment necessary to perform the specified care required to meet the patient needs (done independently as required). Involves all team members when choosing proper equipment and instruments, and delegates tasks to other team members as assigned by the registered nurse to insure continuity of care. Conducts initial and ongoing assessment of assigned patients in order to obtain information necessary to develop an effective care plan. Continually assesses patient's procedure in order to develop an effective plan of care for instrumentation/equipment/supplies. Ensures all instruments, supplies, and equipment are present, in safe working order and have been checked prior to the surgical procedures. Follows physician preference cards present in each OR room for established standards regarding room set up and instrument tables.

Implements patient care by following established policies and procedures for counts and initiates corrective action. Sets up back table and mayo stand according to case procedure. Passes instruments, supplies effectively to the physician and other surgical assistants as well as anticipating their needs according to established standards. Verifies with the surgeon the specimen collected, properly handles the specimen and gives it to the RN immediately. Assists in transportation of patients, assisting with lift, turn, and position patients as appropriate.Assists in revision of instrument sets and procedure cards for each case appropriately.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

Education: High school and some college.

Licensure:

Experience: One year experience or completion on surgical tech training course.

Certifications: BLS Basic Life Support Within 3 Months Of Hire.

Other: Excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills are required. Previous healthcare experience is required.

Preferred Experience: Two to three years.

Preferred Certifications: Completion of a Surgical Technician Training Program is preferred .

Preferred Other: Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
