POSITION PURPOSE –

The Database Engineering Architect is responsible for the design, implementation and lifecycle management of technology architectures and application architectures that support one or more application systems. You will be responsible for identifying and implementing technology and application solution designs and delivering sustainable, cost-effective business applications based on industry and business research. You’ll also responsible for implementation and oversight of sustaining technology governance processes and associated teaching and mentoring of Business and IT Associates in proper use of the technology and application base.

You will lead the design, creation, enhancement and maintenance of The Home Depot’s database environments which include Oracle, SQL Server, Informix, DB2 LUW and zOS. Responsibilities include accountability of a growing database infrastructure, support of multiple mission critical retail applications, providing architectural/technical direction, performance tuning, capacity planning, trending analysis and creation and execution of best practices/standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS –

8+ years DBA experience with one or more of the following: Oracle, SQL Server, Informix or DB2 – LUW or zOS

2+ years as a Database Architect

Experience designing complex systems; proven ability in defining and implementing sound architectural solutions

Ability to define and articulate an enterprise architecture to a diverse group of stakeholders which includes project managers, business clients, systems engineers and senior leadership

Ability to identify and communicate various architectural options and their associated trade-offs is paramount

Ability to coordinate (with both project management and engineering) major systems events such as infrastructure upgrades, database upgrades, patching, application upgrades, load tests and deployments

Experience supporting of 24x7 mission critical production database environments

Advanced Performance Tuning and Capacity Planning skills

College degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience required

Ability to understand and articulate multi-tier application architectures

Familiarity with infrastructure hardware such as switches, load balancers, SSL accelerators and the concepts of highly-available systems, clustering, failover and vertical vs. horizontal scalability

Familiarity with enterprise storage architectures: SAN, NAS

Cloud architectures and cloud based applications and application stacks

NATURE AND SCOPE –

Typically reports to Senior Architect, Senior Manager, or Director No associates report to this role on a permanent basis, but requires the leadership of a work group: assign and review work, train and contribute to performance appraisal (but not hiring, firing or disciplinary action).

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS –

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.






MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS –

EDUCATION REQUIRED –

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS –

Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS –

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES –

Expert technical proficiency in one or more of the following: Retail applications, Windows platform, UNIX platforms, MVS COBOL, JAVA, J2EE, Relational Databases, Websphere Application Server, Websphere Commerce, Websphere MQ, Networking (Voice, LAN, WAN), SAP, Siebel, Peoplesoft. Comprehensive understanding of systems, applications, and/or networks so that practical solutions can be provided that factor system performance, usability, quality, cross-system interdependencies, scalability, and overall cost to develop and maintain. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Strong oral and written communications skills.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES –

Lead design, development, and deployment of technical and application solutions to meet business requirements that are cost effective and sustainable. Deliver conceptual, logical, and physical solution specifications. Translate business requirements using complex methods and models to determine appropriate system solutions. Provide input into annual budget planning for technology migrations and project cost estimation. Research, identify, test, certify, and select technology products required for solution delivery. Establish and implement technology migration strategies for a specific application or architecture within an IT portfolio. Lead technology review meetings and ensure appropriate governance processes are followed.
