Position Overview: 
The Safety Specialist will share responsibility with the Safety Supervisor /Manager for the maintenance of all Safety and Health programs to ensure compliance with OSHA and all applicable local, state and federal regulatory requirements. The Safety Specialist will work with the Safety Supervisor/Manager in developing, maintaining and implementing all Safety and Health programs and initiatives. The Safety Specialist is the senior on-site Safety point person for the Rocky Mount Bakery. 
 
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Proactively coordinate with local operations management and personnel in all departments to promote an open, honest, continuously improving safety culture. 
  • Help develop and manage Safety work processes and systems including policies and procedures, safety meetings, incident reporting and investigations, safety training, and emergency response. 
  • Identify and report safety hazards, observe all safety requirements and actively strive to provide a safe work environment for employees, contractors and visitors. 
  • Manage and maintain procedures, practices and documentation to ensure compliance with the requirements of OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) program at Rocky Mount. 
  • Maintain the process hazard analysis, management of change, incident investigation and compliance audit action item tracking processes for Rocky Mount 
  • Provide assistance to the Safety Manager in the implementation, and maintenance of various regulatory programs to address existing and new requirements from various federal, state and local agencies (EPA, SQF, OSHA, NCOSHA, DHS) 
  • Lead Hourly Safety Champion Efforts and initiatives to assure hourly safety champions are engaged. 
  • Evaluate contractors to ensure work is performed in accordance with Company standards, policies and procedures. 
  • Lead Behavior Observation initiatives for the Rocky Mount Bakery 
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Company Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines. 
  • Familiarity with environmental requirements and permits is preferred 
  • Collaborate on solutions to improve and/or correct situations affecting the safety of employees and impacts on the environment 
  • Ensure the Rocky Mount Bakery is proactive in regards to compliance with identified environmental and occupational health and safety requirements 
  • Assist management in understanding and applying policies and programs as well as provide appropriate guidance and coaching 
  • Maintain OSHA logs and documentation, conduct incident investigations, and maintain investigation logs 
  • Organize and facilitate training for various programs (confined space, lockout/tag out, first aid, etc), and/or oversee external vendors in delivery of training as necessary 
  • Analyze historical data and trends to prioritize the activities of Health & Safety 
  • Conduct Safety and Environmental audits of the facility with participation of management team 
  • Lead the Health & Safety Committee and facilitate weekly meetings 
  • Be an active member of the Rocky Mount Bakery Leadership Team 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • A solid background in a manufacturing environment (at least 5 years) 
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is highly preferred 
  • Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) is considered a major asset 
  • Experience with different methodologies for determining root cause issues 
  • Experience maintaining OSHA logs and compliance documentation 
  • Experience working with government agencies and external vendors related to Health and Safety 
  • Bachelor's degree in Health & Safety or a related field, or equivalent work.
