On behalf of RTI International, Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking Field Staff who can assist on a community-based research study, the NC Young Women’s CoOp, for RTI International’s Substance Use, Gender and Applied Research (SUGAR) Program in North Carolina. 

The mission of RTI International’s SUGAR program is to conduct high-quality, multidisciplinary research that seeks to reduce substance abuse, HIV infection, and risk behaviors; and enhance family and community support in addressing substance abuse in underserved populations in community-based settings. We also work with federal organizations to measure and evaluate the performance of substance abuse prevention and treatment services.

Under the direction of Dr. Wendee Wechsberg, SUGAR conducts research in North Carolina, Tajikistan and South Africa. These research projects bring RTI's scientific expertise into partnership with community advocates dedicated to improving the lives of substance users and other key populations.

In following the parameters of this federally sponsored research study, all job applicants must mirror the intervention study participants and thus must identify as female. 

Field Staff Duties

  • Market the study in local communities and organizations 
  • Recruit study participants and maintain contact with them for subsequent appointments
  • Conduct alcohol, pregnancy and urine drug testing
  • Conduct individual intervention sessions
  • Provide active referrals as needed
  • Complete relevant paperwork and daily reports
  • Ensure integrity and quality of data collection by following all study protocols

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (additional education is a plus) 
  • Energetic, enthusiastic and passionate in improving the health of others
  • Ability to plan, anticipate and manage multiple tasks
  • Comfortable in addressing sensitive topics involving sex, HIV, drugs and gender-based violence
  • Ability to protect the privacy and confidentiality of study participants
  • Driver’s license with a clean driver’s record
  • Have reliable automobile available for project use (mileage will be reimbursed accordingly at the government rate)
  • Knowledge of Guilford County is required 

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience with conducting community-based research
  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults
  • Strong interest and commitment to prevention interventions among underserved populations (e.g., African-American young women) 

Additional Information

  • Flexibility with schedule to work after-hours and weekends with prior notice
  • Flexibility with schedule to work throughout Guilford County. Ability to work in Wake and/or Durham Counties on occasion is a plus
  • Full-time (30-40 hours/week) and part-time positions will be considered
  • Compensation commensurate with education and experience
  • Data collection is expected to start September 2016
