Nursing educators facilitate staff competency in providing Relationship-Based Care by using adult learning principles, demonstrating interest in and respect for learners, and creating an environment of safety for both patients and colleagues.

Work in collaboration with Nursing Education and other departments to assess, plan, develop, implement/coordinate, and evaluate the learning process and skill acquisition of colleagues, students, and instructors of affiliating schools. Collaborative functions include the orientation process, preceptor development and programming, continuing education, staff development, mandatory education, and new product/new process education.

II. Position Qualifications: Minimum Education, Licensure/Certification and Experience Required

A. Education

* Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

B. Licensure/Certification

* Current RN licensure in the State of Michigan

* CNOR Certification preferred

* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

* Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required if working in critical care or a cardiac area

* Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor certification within 6 months of hire

* Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification obtained within 6 months of hire

C. Special skills/Aptitudes

* Familiarity with process improvement

* Teaching experience

* Simulation experience

* Ability to design and develop surgical services specific competency content

* Knowledge of current professional nursing theory, practice and techniques applicable to the care of patients.

* Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with nursing staff and management when determining nursing personnel educational needs.

* Demonstration of unit/department mandatory competencies

* Technical and analytical skills necessary to observe nursing practice identify learning needs and design effective program.

* Ability to use desktop computer including use of e-mail, Microsoft office suite

D. Experience

3-5 years of experience in various surgical services (i.e. cardiovascular,neurosurgical,

orthopedic, etc.) as well as in pre-operative and post-anesthesia services

III. Duties/Responsibilities

A. Facilitate Learning -- Nurse Educators are responsible for creating an environment that facilitates participant learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.

B. Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization -- Nurse Educators recognize their responsibility for helping participants develop and integrate the values and behaviors expected.

C. Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies -- Nurse Educators use a variety of strategies (including simulation) to assess and evaluate participant learning.

D. Participate in Course/Program, Design and Evaluation of Outcomes -- Nurse Educators are responsible for formulating and evaluating course outcomes, and designing courses/programs that reflect contemporary health care trends.

E. Function as a Change Agent and Leader -- Nurse Educator's role model as change agents. Develops leadership skills to shape and implement change.

F. Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role -- Nurse Educators recognize their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential.

G. Engage in Scholarship -- Nurse Educators acknowledge and participate in teaching as a scholarly activity. Participates in evidence-based research activities and/or studies as opportunities arise.

H. Function within the Education Environment -- Nurse Educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice.
