DESCRIPTION

This is work in assessing patient health problems and needs, developing and implementing nursing care plans, and maintaining medical records. This employee administers nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. The incumbent may advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management. This work may also include inspecting facilities and/or evaluating or providing consultation on health care programs, services or policies.

Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees.

Position Specific Information

This is a tobacco-free position so incumbent must not currently be using any form of tobacco.

Incumbent must hold a current registration as a Registered Nurse from the state of Florida.

This is a 10 month position, working only during the school year.

The salary for this position is $1593.87 biweekly.

The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. The incumbent works in the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County assigned to the Community Health and Performance Improvement Division with responsibility in the School Health Services Program. This position is coded managerial in accordance with FS 447.203 4(a) 1,3,4,5, (Health Services, Case Management, and Supervision).

HEALTH SERVICES

Provides first aid, acute, and emergency care to ill/injured students, faculty, and staff. Provides for the safe and accurate administration of medications, immunizations, health screenings, and nursing procedures. Documents on appropriate records all services, assessments, interactions, reactions, evaluations, and plans. Maintains confidentiality of all records, client interactions, and service according to HIPAA privacy codes. Communicates long and short term school health and goals, and assists in revisions. Assists in planning for and/or provides CPR and First Aid for staff and faculty. Provides orientation, health counseling, health education, and relevant health occupation experiences for students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community. Effectively communicates and implements school health services according to the established school health plan, state guidelines, policies and procedures. Serves as a consultant/resource to staff, parents, students, administration and the community. Demonstrates involvement in school, classroom and community activities working toward improving school health. Consistently models cooperation and teamwork through professionalism and works toward a school-wide atmosphere of wellness conducive to learning and highest student achievement. Promotes safety measures and programs in the school to assure a safe and healthy environment, including adherence to OSHA guidelines for prevention of exposure to blood borne pathogens, use of universal precautions, and communicable disease surveillance and education to prevent the spread of infections.

DIRECT SERVICE/CASE MANAGEMENT

Reviews student physicals, Immunizations, clinic cards, and other health information. Conducts client interviews to obtain pertinent historical, physical and social data. Performs routine diagnostic tests, including vital signs and body measurements, as needed. Initiates and completes accident and injury reports. Develops and implements care plans. Assures annual distribution, collection, and filling of all clinic cards. Identifies actual and/or potential health problems in students and works towards resolution. Summarize and reports current trends in health status of students, identification and resolution of health care problems, and immunization status. Confers with parents, students, community agencies, and health care providers, completes health needs awareness list, and interprets health needs of students to school personnel. Assists in evaluation and placement decisions for medically complex and at risk students. Assists schools in implementing emergency school plan. Initiates and completes accident and injury reports with appropriate documentation. Assesses the home environment of students through home visits, providing counseling, health guidance, referral, and follow up.

SUPERVISION

Ensures accurate implementation of the medication protocol. Supervises, trains, delegates and evaluates health care and school staff performing health related duties, including insulin administration. Supervises, orients, trains, and evaluates the Health Support Technician(s), including monitoring of leave and attendance, EARS, training, People First, meeting of performance standards, completion of performance appraisal(s), developing performance plans and taking disciplinary action as appropriate. Complies with or monitors the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422, FS, and chapter 3A-24 of the Florida Administrative Code.

OTHER DUTIES

Establishes and maintains good working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, supervisor and the community. Completes annual staff and nursing in-services and Nursing Action Team meetings when scheduled by the agency. Completes required agency reports and forms including timesheets, evaluations, EARS, and Travel within requited timeframes. Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings. Maintains CPR and First Aid Certifications, and continuing education hours for licensure. Utilizes the computer daily for e-mail, communication with supervisor, information and documentation. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Delivers infants and performs postpartum examinations and treatment.
