About this job

The ideal candidate is a mechanical engineer, you will research, design and specify mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems for all Williamsburg properties: includes preparing drawings, job coordination, and site inspections; inspecting installation of mechanical, electrical (including fire and security), and plumbing equipment; coordinating commissioning of MEP systems; specifying replacement equipment as required; all in the most appropriate, cost effective, and timely manner.

Overall responsibility for design of assigned projects; deliver design on schedule and within budget. Responsible for involving key players in design process to obtain input from all stakeholders. Provide technical expertise to support CW Operations in primary area of design responsibility, including: mechanical, plumbing and energy utilization systems. Below is a list of job responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Conduct feasibility studies and evaluate design alternatives, including safety elements, customer requirements, performance standards, energy efficiency and code requirements.
  • Perform and/or supervise staff or consultants in preparation of design development documents, construction plans, and specifications, meeting all applicable codes.
  • Lead design process by including all key players in design development to ensure safety, ease of operation and maintenance, functionality, durability, and end results meets the customer's needs.
  • Holds design working meetings and holds design review meetings to obtain input from all stakeholders.
  • Primary area of design responsibility for mechanical engineer is mechanical and plumbing systems, with secondary emphasis in designing basic electrical systems.
  • Perform energy use analysis using building and system energy simulation software, and provide economic comparisons of alternate equipment design solutions, including budget and cost estimating of options.
  • Provide technical support to Facilities Maintenance staff to assist with selection of equipment replacements, and troubleshooting of systems.
  • Perform and assist Project Engineer to coordinate with contractors, consulting firms, vendors, city officials, and CWF stakeholders during construction of MEP systems.
  • Perform inspection of MEP system installations, review contractor submittals for compliance with construction documents; insure that specifications are met; if design intent is not being implemented, prepare documentation, distribute to appropriate team members and follow up to assure compliance.
  • Participate in the research, design, and implementation of energy conservation or utility conservation efforts as assigned. Coordinate commissioning or re-commissioning of MEP systems to assure the systems are operating efficiently as designed and intended.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. PE License preferred.
  • Minimum five years of mechanical or electrical engineering experience with a strong technical background in design and plan preparation using AutoCAD.
  • Experience with HVAC environmental control systems, BAS, and Commissioning, including complex laboratory and museum environmental systems.
  • Experience designing chiller and boiler applications, pumping systems, HVAC piping, and VAV air handlers.
  • Experience designing sanitary waste and vent systems, and water distribution systems for potable or non-potable applications.
  • Work well in a fast-paced environment, competent in handling simultaneously occurring tasks and projects.
  • Have excellent written, oral communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex issues.
