Job Description                                                                             

Title:   Residential Counselor (revised  11.29.12)

Reporting: The Residential Counselor reports to the Program Manager of the house to which he/she has been assigned.

Summary

The role of the Residential Counselor is to provide direct care to the residents of Corbett Group Homes.  The Residential Counselor is an agent of change and as such exemplifies the values of the agency.  The Residential Counselor is a team member who participates in the development and implementation of the care plan for each of the residents.

Typical Responsibilities and Duties

  • Contribute to a welcoming environment in the home for family members and other members of the treatment community.
  • Be knowledgeable and supportive of the residents' individualized (Appraisal/Needs and Services) care plan; provide feedback to the team regarding the strengths of residents and their families, as well as the challenges that they face in meeting their goals.
  •  Maintain a professional relationship under all foreseen and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Assist in menu development and the preparation of food for residents
  • Maintain a "home-like" atmosphere that is supportive of the developmental needs of the residents.
  • Accompany children to and from school, on outings, and to medical appointments.
  • Identify signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring them to the team's attention
  • Perform housekeeping duties such as laundry, cleaning, dishwashing, and changing of linens.
  • Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
  • Be aware of all resident medications and their side effects.  Document and communicate medication reactions or concerns.
  • Support residents' success in school work or other vocational aspirations
  • Provide guidance to residents in making positive decisions which will contribute the achievement of their goals.
  • Report concerns regarding physical plant or agency vehicles
  • Administer First Aid/CPR as needed
  • Work with residents to develop hobbies, interests and independent living skills.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate recreation activities
  • Document Incident Reports within the shift that they occurred
  • Complete shift change reports
  • Attend 40 hours of  trainings per year to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Safeguard agency funds and resources
  • Be aware of aspects of the environment, proactively eliminate or notify management of potential hazards to the health and well-being of residents and staff.

Responsibilities to the Team

  • Participate in the development and revision of house programs with emphasis on structure, consistency and communication.
  • Complete all communication, logging and reports in a timely manner
  • Carry out the daily structure and program of the  Group Home
  • Hold team members accountable to agreements and program functions
  • Attend and Participate in House Meetings

Knowledge and Skills

  • Be fully aware of the individualized program of each of the residents entrusted to their care.
  • Be fully aware and supportive of the policies and procedures of Corbett Group Homes, Inc.
  • Be aware of licensing requirements (Title 22) for the ongoing maintenance of the group home.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age
  2. Education, Training and Experience:

Minimum HS diploma or GED (Bachelor's or AA/AS Degree preferred).  One year of experience serving at risk children & youth preferred.

  1. Possession of a valid California Driver's License
  2. Five years of continuous driving experience
  3. Must clear all criminal fingerprint background checks including California Child Abuse Registry, FBI and Department of Justice
  4. Must clear a health and tuberculosis screening by a physician to work with youth ages 6-17.
