Overview
Directs and leads major segment of IT organization, overseeing technology architecture, systems development, and service delivery. Responsible for assisting in the development and dissemination of the the related IT strategy, shaping methods and standards, managing technical resources, and overseeing a broad portion of the company's technology portfolio.
This particular IT organization is Business Intelligence (BI), which is a particularly strategic technology domain facilitating business success by delivering insightful, consumable, and actionable reports, scorecards, dashboards, and analytical outputs (including statistically-derived predictive models) to improve business performance, anchored by synthesized, accurate, and governed enterprise data and incorporating trends and variables discovered in unstructured 'big data' sources. The domain technologically spans the entire BI capability stack, including:
  • Design and relational modeling of the company's proprietary enterprise data warehouse (powered by Oracle database)
  • Extraction/Transformation/Loading (ETL) design and development (using Informatica), feeding data into the EDW from underlying systems and sources
  • Architecture, middleware tooling, and development enabling near/real-time ETL
  • Master Data Management design, development, and process governance
  • Dimensional modeling and development of abstracted analytical data constructs (Essbase cubes)
  • Design and development of published/burstable reports, dashboards, and scorecards
  • Custodianship and development of the company's traditional analytics (OBIEE), predictive modeling and analytics, and 'Big Data' discovery technologies. For all the above:
    • Architectural designs and roadmapping
    • Infrastructural scalability, viability, support and administration (in partnership with IT Operations & Infrastructure team);
    • Functional collaboration, roadmapping, and support with and for business stakeholders
Specific Responsibilities Include
  • Lead the creation of architectural designs and standards for a scalable BI platform, roadmap (in collaboration with functional stakeholders and considering actively/continuously researched emerging technology), release and development methodologies and frameworks, and communications outlets related the Business Intelligence strategy. Leads key strategic activities and fosters strategy acceptance through technical credibility, delivery reliance, and visible enthusiasm. Helps transform plan into tactics, and insures appropriate performance measures and delivery teams.
  • Through sustained release and development methodologies, ensure delivery of roadmap iterations within conceived estimates and agreed upon budgets. Works closely with the team to ensure completion of design activities (including translation of complex requirements into technical and functional design specifications), development, defect resolution, test cases and execution, system and performance monitors. Conceived delivery frameworks to work within prescribed change control processes and procedures (to produce deliverables that meet external and SOX audit compliance requirements) and according to authored and maintained architectural standards and best practices to ensure the long-term success of the overall business intelligence strategy. Ensure project team structures, assigned staffing, project plans, and project budget are accurate, set-up to succeed, and approved. Execute workload smoothing and coordinate roles and responsibilities, engaging and liaisoning with vendors for contract labor as necessary and budgetarily approved. Deliver regular status reporting to senior IT management and stakeholders as necessary.
  • Actively develop staff and organization capability in the domain. Define job duties of staff (which include data architects, ETL developers, BI developers, and analysts), maintain current position descriptions, hire staff (both full-time and contractor positions), conduct performance appraisals and salary reviews, and performance management. Regularly reviews the skill sets of the staff and assists in creating individual development plans.
  • Positively manage relationships with business stakeholders, including effective means to intake requests for IT services, prioritizing needs, coordinate cost estimates and anticipated benefits, and assist in utilization of provided technologies and capabilities. Educate on alternatives, including adoption of actively and continuously researched emerging technologies.
  • Contributes to the development of the annual IT budget. Provides high-level staffing plans. Responsible for managing key component of IT budget. Responsible for capital and expense forecasting. Responsible for benefit realization.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline required. Master's certification in such domains preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in BI strategy implementation and development, and at least 5 years of people management required.
  • Experience conceiving and implementing architectures in anticipatory fashion that capture data from applications and external sources in real/near-time data, feed the business intelligence platform, and readily translate into synthesized, insightful information. Competence with statistics and data science concepts, anchoring enablement of analyses and predictive models to improve business performance, decision-making, and differentiation.
  • Experience managing third party solution providers, ensuring interface designs optimize customer/end-user experiences, facilitating functional achievement of business requirements and objectives, guiding technical architecture and framework decisions, and delivering solutions on-time, on-budget, and performing reliably to scale.
  • Experience leading implementation and solution delivery across components in the Business Intelligence stack required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relational structures, dimensional data modeling, Structured Query Language (SQL), data warehousing, Essbase, and user-friendly/optimized report, dashboard, scorecard and analytical design techniques is essential. Certification or experience in relevant business intelligence technologies (such as OBIEE, IBI-WebFocus, Tableau, Microstrategy, Endeca, SAS, R, Stata, SPSS) and applied business acumen related to restaurant or retail operations, finance, marketing, and HR desired.
