Job Summary

The Communications Technician maintains the following equipment and keeps it in good condition: Central Office switching equipment, power equipment, battery plants and various other control and power distribution equipment.

 

 

Job Responsibilities 

 

  • Perform routine maintenance operation on central office, power equipment, repeaters, carriers, PBX’s, DPABX’s, toll terminals and associated equipment and wiring, miscellaneous special equipment and associated wiring.
  • Place, remove and rearrange cross connections on distributing frames in central office.
  • Perform maintenance routines on distributing frames.
  • Place and remove test lead and Identify cable pairs.
  • Install, rearrange, and remove PBX, PABX, miscellaneous special equipment, subscriber station, central office and toll equipment.
  •  Locate and correct faults in such equipment and wiring.
  •  Install and maintain central office power plants.
  • Install, test and maintain equipment associated with mobile, teletype, microwave and radio communication.
  • Prepare records and reports as necessary, and handle other generally associated operations.

 

Note: Job bidding and selection will be administered under mutually agreed upon guidelines of the local labor agreement. 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years digital central office experience or completed 12 college credit hours of job related courses in computer science or electronics, or combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete Basic Electronics courses.
  • Experience with DMS-10, DMS-100, DMS-200, 5ESS, TOPS, Equal Access, E911, ATM, Sonet or have ability to qualify.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the job including distinguish all colors; work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles and bucket trucks; lift 75 lbs; lift, carry, setup and secure a 75 lb ladder.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret circuit schematics.
  • Possession of strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to accept call-outs and work overtime as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to work rotating schedules and weekends.
  • Stellar attendance, work and safety record required.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

 

            Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Electronics.
  • Experience with performing transmission and noise measurements and making corrective adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to interpret work prints, service orders and drawings; work from oral or written instructions, plan work and work without direct supervision and repair technical problems with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledge or able to acquire: Power system and its operators, digital data communication, long loop line treat requirements, carrier and span line maintenance, "Special Service" equipment install and maintenance, central office "controlled maintenance" procedures and records, and fiber optic terminal equipment.
