Job Summary 5A is a 32 bed Adult surgical unit with an Orthopedic and Trauma specialty focus.

The Orthopedic patient population includes total joint replacement and other reconstructive surgeries involving spine, extremities and traumatic as well as non-traumatic injured patients.

The Trauma patient population includes traumatically injured patients as well as occasional minor burn and general surgery patients.

The Trauma service collaborates jointly with the Orthopedic service for care of the multi-injured patient.

A collaborative multidisciplinary approach is used in the provision of patient centered care by the patient care team which consists of physicians, nurses, physical /occupational therapists, practice management coordinators and other support staff.

Responsibilities* To assist the department manager in planning, oversight and management of the unit and the provision of patient care. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research. To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements. Reports directly to the Nurse Manager. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Nurse Manager.

Responsibilities include:

Personnel Management: Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff. Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff. Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff. Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans. Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Nurse Manager.

Clinical Practice: Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the nurse manager to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area: Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.

Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation. Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research: Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Required Qualifications* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

Required Educational Requirements:

*Applicant must meet one of the following:

*Bachelors of Science in Nursing

Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.

Minimum five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse.

Two (2) years of recent acute care experience.

Experience as a charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.

Unit committee membership.

Desired Qualifications* Previous Orthopedic/Trauma experience. Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices. Consultative and teaching skills. Master of Science Nursing Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates. Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases.

Work Schedule Hours/Week: 40 hours

Shift: The scheduled shift and hours requirement including weekends will be based on unit need. The expected staffing component is 30%.
