Basic Purpose Of The Job

The Ultrasonographer shall perform ultrasound procedures as well as provide the technical knowledge, expertise and professional judgment required to support the mission and goal of St. Lukes Regional Medical Center. Our mission is to improve the health of the people of Siouxland.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

* Graduation from a formal training program or equivalent training program focusing on Ultrasonography

Minimum Work Experience

Required Licenses/Certifications

* Current Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or Registry eligible.

* Current CPR Certification (effective January, 2002).

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Machines: Ultrasound Units, Teleradiology System, RIS/EMR Information System (Radiology Applications), office equipment, Telephone skills, PACS.

Administrative: The ultrasonographer shall demonstrate a working knowledge of technical factors and patient body habitus to perform a wide variety of technical procedures. He/she must maintain knowledge of current department views, assist the radiologist in procedures, utilize EMR/RIS PACS to process paperwork, assist in training new and student ultrasonographers, perform other assigned duties as requested, practice sterile and isolation techniques resulting in the prevention of cross-contamination and infection. He/she must be able to concentrate on the task at hand and consistently follow procedures, must demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, cooperation, and maintain an attitude of professionalism, strictly adhere to all hospital and departmental safety regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures

Essential Functions

Essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the jobs purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable.

* Performs quality ultrasound (sonogram) procedures for the Radiologist to interpret.

* Performs care and light maintenance of the ultrasound equipment, imaging equipment and the ultrasound room. This includes testing and inspection (quality assurance) of the ultrasound equipment for accurate usage, performance and can assess equipment problems.

* Explains procedure to patients (patient communication) and performs patient care activities.

* Utilizes information systems and prepares all documentation necessary to ensure accurate and consistent information work flows.

* Completes daily tasks including prepping area, stocking supplies and cleaning of equipment

* Answers the phone, takes accurate messages, schedules patient appointments and performs some secretarial/filing duties.

* Correlates the ultrasound exam with other tests preparations to best pronounce the disease process.

* Ability to complete the work with little supervision and efficiently under stressful patient exam schedules.

* Accurately maintains the necessary documentation and records to comply with regulatory guidelines established by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) accreditation body

* Promotes a positive public relations image through productive and professional interactions with nurses, physicians, visitors, patients, peers, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.

* Demonstrates professional conduct towards patients and visitors and maintains privacy of the patients, their test results and records.

* Maintains communication with Imaging Administration, staff and physicians in a professional manner. Seeks the advice of the Ultrasound Supervisor with problems before implementing a solution.

* Rotates through call schedules and other ultrasound area responsibilities. Accepts new projects to promote a professional environment in ultrasound.

* Facilitates professional learning environment for US staff including Radiology Technology/US students and new hires through in-service, instruction and clinical supervision.

* Disposes of all body fluids, hazardous materials, chemicals in an appropriate manner according to OSHA standards and guidelines.

* Adheres to all hospital and departmental safety regulations, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols.

* Actively participates in Departmental PI projects to improve Imaging Services

* Attendance at various meetings and Educational Opportunities
