Job Summary/Essential Duties:

* Utilizes the phone system, paging system, call light system, computer system, pneumatic tube system, photocopier, and fax machine to provide clerical support. Monitors performance of the listed systems and other unit resources and reports related needs for repairs or supplies to the Unit Director.

* Organizes medical charts for patients by assembling new upon admission, adding appropriate pages to charts as necessary, disassembling charts and routing appropriately on transfer, death or discharge and discharge. Prints forms for nursing or medical staff as directed.

* Performs order entry functions by transcribing physician orders onto the Medication Administration Record, entering them in the computer, and/or scheduling diagnostic tests, therapies, physician appointments etc., with the appropriate departments or offices. Notifies nursing personnel of orders requiring immediate attention and assures that orders have been signed by the Registered Nurse.Reviews available clerical/support system supplies daily and orders as appropriate. Cleans TCC and small supply room daily and cleans datascopes/cables after each patient use. Periodically cleans refrigerator, dictation booths, etc.

* Provides for care, comfort, and safety of assigned patients under close direction of the registered nurse. Transports or accompanies patients within the hospital or to their vehicle on discharge, transfers patients from room to room or from chair to bed (and return), and positions patients.

* Performs or assists in performing documentation in the patient chart, patient activities of daily living and basic nursing care procedures such as bathing, feeding, ambulation, specimen collection, vital sings, etc., as directed by the Registered Nurse.

* Answers call lights and responds to patient requests and/or relays to Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse responsible for patient's care.

* Evaluates patients needs and assists them with recreational activities.

* Orders supplies for patient care and puts away when delivered.

Education

* Ability to read and write in order to complete requisition forms, comprehend and communicate complicated verbal and written instructions when scheduling patients for diagnostic tests and ordering prescribed meals, transcribe physicians' orders accurately and legibly, and to perform basic arithmetic calculations in order to calculate intake and output and record patient weights and vital signs. This level is normally acquired through completion of high school.

License/Certification

* State of Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant certification required. Additional unit-specific knowledge is obtained through orientation, checklists and competency testing.

* Basic Life Support required within 60 days of hire.

Experience

* Approximately one month on-the-job experience necessary to gain knowledge of basic patient care procedures, to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit procedures and schedules, become familiar with basic medical terminology and to appropriately operate computer charting system.

Skills

* Interpersonal skills necessary in order to exchange factual information with patients, visitors, physicians and nursing personnel in a courteous manner, and to allay apprehensions of patients and visitors.

* Analytical skills necessary in order to prioritize clerical tasks, organize work, gather and interpret routine data regarding patient assessments, transports, and maintain routine records.

* Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for up to 50% of work time when transcribing physicians' orders and for up to 20% of work time when providing patient care.
