JOB SUMMARY\:  To promote optimal trauma care in the context of a regionalized trauma care system through; clinical activities; professional and public education; research activities; quality improvement activities; maintaining the trauma registry; and administrative functions.  Acts as a resource person to all patient care areas regarding nursing care as related to the trauma patient.  Manages care by maintaining effective lines of communication with all concerned parties.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS 
 
  1. Works closely with the hospital staff, administrators, department heads, patient care managers and nursing staff to coordinate all aspects of trauma care. 
    1. Provides/coordinates in-services education for the trauma team. 
    2. Supervises and evaluates overall trauma team performance.
    3. Participates in and coordinates planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the trauma program.          
    4. Coordinates nursing care aspects of the trauma program with appropriate patient care managers and assists in the development of problem lists and protocols for trauma care.
    5. Establishes, reviews, and revises protocols setting priorities for care.
       
  2. Maintains individual accountability for clinical practice and serves as a clinical resource to nursing staff.  Actively participates in providing trauma care. 
    1. Reviews the plan of care for trauma patients to ensure protocols care plans are initiated and followed.
    2. Assist staff in problem solving related care of trauma patients. 
    3. Maintains current knowledge of trauma care.
    4. Participates in hospital wide trauma education for ancillary support services. 
    5. Participates in orientation of all new trauma team members.
    6. Maintains certification in area of specialty and educational requirements. 
       
  3. Provides Administrative functions associated with Trauma Service.

                a.  Conducts daily rounds on all trauma patients for concurrent review of care.

                b. Coordinates Trauma Case Reviews.

                c. Oversees development and maintenance of trauma registry.         Supervises data  collection, analyzes data, distributes reports to appropriate team members, administrators, and   state trauma registry.

                d. Obtains funds through grant opportunities to support the trauma program. 

                e. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

                f. Manages Trauma Registry Personnel. 

 

       4.  Maintain hospital role as Trauma Facility by assuring compliance with State and    Local Requirements.

               a. Participates in city & regional councils/meetings related to trauma for the trauma service area.

                b. Promotes the regionalization of trauma care through outreach in other counties and communication via\: visits to other medical facilities to network with staff and administration; offering assistance to outlying EMS groups; working in partnership with local EMS to improve care and assist outlying areas with established protocols and training programs.

               c. Promote the benefits of organized trauma service systems to professional and

Community groups whenever possible.

              d. Attend state and local meeting to assure up to date knowledge of requirements.

Qualification:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\: 
 
Education\:  Bachelor’s degree in nursing; will consider RN with Education Plan resulting in BSN by January 2011
 
Licensure/Certification\: Current RN licensure for the state of Arkansas.  TNCC, PALS/ENPC, ACLS are required.  CEN or CCRN are preferred.
 
Experience\: Minimum 3-5 years experience in emergency nursing and in the care of the trauma patients, with advanced critical care skills.
 
Knowledge and Skills\:  Demonstrated ability to problem solve and be supportive/innovative in the process of change; strong human relations skills with an ability to handle difficult/sensitive issues with regard to patient confidentiality; excellent written/oral communication skills
 
Services Skills\: An ability to integrate and interpret data from diverse sources addressing issues of moderate to high complexity.  An ability to develop strong relationships with customers (i.e. patients, physicians and supporting departments). Demonstrated facilitation skills with a working knowledge of CQI tools and techniques.
 
Physical Demands\: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking/sitting.  Lifts equipment   up to 25 lbs., patients up to 150 lbs.  May require occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and/or crouching. 
 
Working Conditions\: Works in an office and patient care setting.  Medium risk to exposure to  
infectious diseases, body fluids, and hazardous waste.  May be subject to potential injuries such as needle sticks, muscle strains, and skin irritations or burns when working with caustic or volatile substances which require precautions.
