Job Summary/Essential Duties\:

  • Serves as a clinical expert to ensure orthopedic patients and their families “navigate†through the healthcare system throughout the course of their pre-op, surgery and rehabilitation.

  • The navigator develops and implements   specialty services, educational activities, program evaluation and outcome research.

  • Works with physicians, clinical staff, community resources and advocacy groups to enhance coordination of patient care across the continuum.

  • Responsible for organizing, scheduling and retrieving labs, diagnostic and necessary testing and  reports for setting up all pre-operative procedures..

  • Updates and maintains the nurse navigator database timely, accurate.

  • Oversees quality of patient care to assure delivery of individualized nursing care. Revises the care plan in a timely manner when indicated.

  • Oversees patient care delivery to maximize patient/ family/ physician satisfaction. Minimize risk of injury and negative outcomes to patients or employees. Acts as an advocate for patients and family members.  Is recognized as an expert clinician in the care of the orthopaedic patient.  Acts as a resource for staff.

  • Identifies educational needs and educates staff, physicians, patients, families and the community regarding care of the orthopedic patient, the role of the navigator and expected outcomes of the navigator role and orthopedic related topics.

Hours\: 2 - 8 hour days a week plus one 4 hour shift a week.

Qualification:
QUALIFICATIONS\:
Experience

Preferred\:        Three years orthopedic nursing experience.

                        Demonstrated leadership ability.

Education/Licensure
Required\:

Licensed in Nebraska or Iowa as a Registered Nurse, Nebraska and Iowa are compact states must be licensed in the state of your residence.

BSN required, MSN preferred

Orthopedic Nursing Certification within 3 yrs.

 

Update BLS, or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire.  Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following\:  American Red Cross\:  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute\:  CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level-with AEDâ€, and American Heart Association\:  Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. 

 
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
 

Job requires continuous use of reading skills and communication skills, both written and verbal. Incumbents must possess strong leadership, critical thinking and stress management skills. Time management, public relations promotion, conflict resolution, and the ability to be creative and innovative are required. Incumbents must understand the body of knowledge surrounding the orthopedic care continuum.  The successful individual will possess the knowledge of how to plan and deliver care to a diverse population of patients and the ability to communicate and work with people from a variety of age groups, social strata and ethnic backgrounds.
