Description: Qualification:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\:
- Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
- Manages basic/advanced life support needs and stabilizes patients based upon nursing standards, Basic Life Support, Advance Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course and approved protocols.
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
- Records patients’ current vital signs and reports any adverse changes or critical findings to the Emergency Department physician.
- Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
- Prepares and administers medications (orally, subcutaneously, intraveneously) as ordered by the Emergency Department physician and records the administration in the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
- Cleans and bandages wounds as directed.
- Provides basic, bedside care.
- Maintains proper supplies and maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, operation and maintenance needed to care for patients.
- Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
- Utilizes nursing process which includes patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, and evaluation of patient status with accurate documentation in the EHR.
- Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining\: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
- Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate portion of the EHR.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and retains a positive, friendly and courteous attitude to all patients.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS\:
- Secures authorization signatures of patients on the appropriate record.
- Cleans examination rooms between patients and washes instruments as needed.
- Transports, ambulates, and transfers patients as needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE\:
- Current Iowa Registered Nurse license.
- BLS and ACLS required.
- PALS encouraged at hire and required within one year of hire.
- TNCC encouraged at hire and required within one year of hire.
- Obtains CEU’s required for licensed renewal.
- Experience in emergency or critical care nursing desired.
