Description:

The Unit Educator provides educational support for the quality and safety of patient care and the professional development of the clinical staff within the designated clinical unit.  The Unit Educator identifies, develops and delivers educational programs for individuals and groups of learners in both the clinical and classroom setting; provides clinical instruction and facilitates other modalities to meet and ensure clinical competency of staff, safe and effective delivery of care, and to support evidence based practice.  The Unit Educator collaborates with System Clinical Education to promote standardized, effective educational processes including, but not limited to\:  initial onboarding/unit orientation and competency, annual and ongoing competency, professional development and continuing education.


Clinical Knowledge and Expertise

  • Demonstrates high level of clinical competency within designated unit scope and framework
  • Serves as a professional role model in the designated clinical specialty
  • Serves as a mentor and/or preceptor and resource person for unit staff members.

 

Educational Knowledge and Expertise

  • Competent in development, application, and evaluation of learning needs assessments, instructional programs, and instructional interventions and content.
  • Competent in development, implementation, and evaluation of orientation programs for new employees.
  • Coordinates and assists with documentation of performance during the orientation period.
  • Coordinates educational record keeping for regulatory and accrediting bodies
  • Provides follow-through support to staff after completion of formal orientation program.
  • Demonstrates competency in planning, implementing, and evaluation competency, continuing education, and other training programs (ie BCLS, orientation) optimally utilizing existing resources and avoiding duplication of efforts.
  • Demonstrates competency in understanding of adult learners, and chooses instructional approaches appropriate to learner populations.
  • Competent in regulatory requirements, recommended standards of practice, and community practice standards pertinent to both clinical education and unit scope and services
  • Competent in initiating and/or participating in continuous quality improvement and evidence based practice activities.  Incorporates current research and EBP in educational courses and activities
  • Facilitates nursing student clinical rotations as indicated
  • Demonstrates competency in understanding of adult learners, and chooses instructional approaches appropriate to learner populations.
  • Competent to communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form.
  • Demonstrates effective presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and correct utilization of audiovisual and computer equipment including identification and implementation of technology based training.

Process Management

  • Competent to coordinate projects and programs, as assigned, within designated time lines and outcome metrics.
  • Competent in time management, prioritization, and organizational skills adequate to meet designated time lines and responsibilities.

Competent to communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form.

  • Demonstrates effective presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and correct utilization of audiovisual and computer equipment including identification and implementation of technology based training.
  • Performs all other activities as requested and as identified to support patient care, the mission of the facility, and the needs of the unit.
Qualification:

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred)\:

Required\:  BSN.  Active, unrestricted RN license in the state of Kentucky. BLS certification. Basic computer skills

Preferred\:  Certification in clinical specialty or professional development.  ACLS certification.


Experience (required and preferred)\:

Required\:

A minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience

Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively communicate with physicians, hospital staff, educational institution representatives and other professionals

 

Preferred\:

Proven ability to assess, implement and evaluate education needs and programs

Proven ability to utilize learning theory, instructional design an instructional methodologies and technologies to construct educational opportunities within the system

Proven ability to utilize quality measurements, operations improvement, outcome management, and change implementation strategies.
