Protect the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation. Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of this particular business within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders. Provides a full range of legal advice and services and may specialize in one of more areas such as mergers and acquisitions, transactional work, commercial law, contracts law, benefit law, insurance law, regulatory and compliance. Reporting to the Senior Associate General Counsel/Intellectual Property, the Associate General Counsel is responsible for assisting the legal team with all matters related to intellectual property. This position will be heavy on trademark advice, clearance, prosecution, and maintenance; copyright advice, and related enforcement. The Associate General Counsel is required to provide high quality service to internal clients on all assigned trademark, patent, copyright, and domain name matters; work closely with legal counsel in the enforcement of company intellectual property rights; coordinate with and providing support to internal/external counsel, team paralegals, and a wide-range of internal company personnel. As a member of the corporate legal team, this attorney will be expected to work in a team-oriented, results-driven practice group which works collaboratively with its clients on complex legal matters. Primary Responsibilities:

Work with internal clients to address IP needs of the enterprise
Manage trademark prosecution process, clearance of new marks, and trademark maintenance deadlines in connection with IP paralegals
Conduct initial investigations into possible infringements and enforce company IP rights as necessary, handle incoming IP demands as they arise
Advise on copyright related matters including copyright registrations and copyright permission requests
Assist with domain registrations, gTLD strategy, and domain related enforcement matters (UDRPs and takedowns)
Conduct legal review of marketing and advertising materials
Create and maintain internal processes, procedures, and tools, such as playbooks and checklists
Provide training and support on legal issues and developments
Manage intake and onboarding of acquired IP portfolios
Manage outside counsel

Requirements

Required Qualifications:
 

Must be able to work onsite in Minnetonka, MN
Juris Doctorate degree
2-6 years of IP legal experience (law firm or in-house counsel experience)
2 years of significant trademark clearance experience
Experience working in a matrixed environment
Experience creating and delivering presentations, including experience with PowerPoint, Excel, and other standard tools
Current admission to a U.S. state bar, and if relocating to Minnesota, admission to the Minnesota bar within one year of accepting offer of employmentPreferred Qualifications:

Mixed trademark and patent experience
Patent bar member
Experience with a variety of social media platforms
Six Sigma experience or interest in lean legal processing and innovative management of IP portfoliosSoft Skills:

Ability to manage, handle and prioritize multiple projects
Ability to effectively advocate / problem-solve as necessary to obtain desired outcomes
Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting with other attorneys and paralegals of multiple levels
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
