The Sr HFC Designer generates system design in the most cost effective manner while meeting Charter Communications’ and the department’s standards and specifications. Under limited supervision, prepares and maintains detailed design drawings, schematics or specifications, typically using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Works closely with design originators (e.g., engineers, designers) to resolve design details or discrepancies, or to prepare drawings of unusual, complex, or original designs, which require a high degree of precision using CAD or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) equipment. Creates, modifies and controls detailed two and three dimensional parts and assembly drawings from engineers' and technicians' sketches, plans, written and verbal instructions. Evaluates and recommends purchase of CAD/CAE-related computer hardware and software. May work with system management including file maintenance, backup and storage.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design complex extensions and complete small system redesigns, in accordance with the appropriate design specifications.

Utilize PC design software programs to complete forward & reverse system “RF” design work.

Utilize PC CAD software programs to post Fiber Designs, in accordance with the Charter Communications’ standards and specifications.

Process engineering change orders to ensure that all related work is complete, accurate and all related documentation is acquired and routed properly.

Perform quality control checks on field mapping notes and/or map digitizing to ensure all drafting specifications and “RF” design specifications are met.

Add up footages that are associated with field mapping notes, digitizing routing maps, and design maps while differentiating between aerial and underground plant as required.

Serve as technical liaison for construction and technical operations group by providing necessary information to construction or maintenance personnel, on a timely basis, including strand maps, design maps, BOMs, prepares charts, graphs, and sketches of vertical details and SOW documents in various formats.

Independently research and recommend build network specification files related to HFC and passive based architecture.

Project a perception of influence to cross-boundary partners while troubleshooting network performance and outage support in support of construction restoration intervals. Additionally assert team leadership in direct technical expertise for construction and technical operations on OSP-Design M&Ps, roles, expectations and architecture.

Contribute to project coordination and administrative functions by maintaining associated records, providing reports as necessary and processing related invoices.

Maintain back-ups for the Design Department’s servers.

Provide training regarding design computer programs and design department procedures and specifications.

Build and/or critique design profiles to ensure that all specifications have been entered properly and that all program generated design outputs are complete and accurate.

Make detailed computations to determine scale, layout and accurate placement of new land base information.

Create complicated Fiber Splicing Matrixes for projects.

Schedule work assignments and monitor project flow and status.

Maintain accurate weekly production records.

Design and draft FTTP, EPON, and/or HFC optical networks using multiple tools (Bentley, AutoCAD, etc) and CATV standard terminology.

Document as-build updates for project reconciliation.

Review Design considerations for both short term and long term needs in relationship to node sizing, powering, and addressing.

Draw accurate routing conclusions that reflect cost estimate for the availability request.

All other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Proficient Spatial/GIS ability in applications such as MapInfo, ArcGIS, and Google Earth
Must have ability to work closely with other departments and be able to represent all of the Design Department’s policies and procedures
Must have strong understanding of an Oracle Database including the ability to perform queries
Must be able to demonstrate operational knowledge of an AutoCAD or MicroStation, Bentley COMMS based design software program
Must have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Visio and Project applications programs
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of computer operations, file management, Windows 7 or more recent version
Demonstrated a strong understanding of CATV drafting and design standards and other analytical abilities
Must have an excellent understanding of Charter Communications drafting and symbology standards for Coax and Fiber designs
Successful completion of the following training: SCTE - Broadband Telecom Center Specialist (BTCS) Course & Certification and SQL Essential Training for Databases
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Project management and organizational skills
Requires excellent analytical, problem solving and trouble-shooting skills
Must exhibit a thorough understanding of Charter Communications services infrastructure related to network topology and architecture
Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Expert knowledge in the operation and use of all design applications such as Bentley and MapInfo
Able to interpret all designs and applicable documents across all platforms and architecture concepts
Knowledgeable on business partners’ components to be supported and/or influenced by OSP-Design
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications
Proven ability to lead projects, train co-workers and interact professionally with leadership and cross-functional teams
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusion to apply business analytical trending support of departmental/company goals
Ability to manually calculate link loss
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent education and experience
College level math (algebra, trigonometry, calculus) or demonstrated analytical ability preferred
Related Work Experience
5 years of Drafting/design experience or coursework
