Since the HCPL was founded over 70 years ago, the system has grown to include 11 branches, administrative offices, and 2 outreach vehicles. In 2015, annual circulation of materials reached almost 4 million. Today, the Harford County Public Library employs almost 400 staff and serves more than 228,000 registered borrowers.

The Harford County Public Library Foundation was launched in 2000 to cultivate support and raise funds to enhance current library programs and support new initiatives. The Foundation is a viable example of a public-private partnership in action and as a result, Harford County residents have a well-respected, innovative library system that is responsive to community needs.

The Opportunity . . .

The HCPL is seeking a dynamic individual to lead the Harford County Public Library Foundation and provide support for its Board Members. The Foundation Director is primarily responsible for public and community relations, board development, and developing and implementing approved Foundation fundraising activities including direct mail programs, capital campaigns, grants, and special events as well as other activities. The Foundation Director serves as staff liaison between the Library Foundation and Harford County Public Library in coordinating activities. This role requires extensive leadership, communication, and fundraising skills mainly through events and corporate sponsorships with a focus on individual giving, annual giving, and grants. The Executive Director will have a keen desire and ability to develop sustainable partnerships with prospective supporters including corporations, foundations, public policy leaders and individual donors to grow the Foundation through its campaigns. The Foundation Director is an employee of the Harford County Public Library and reports to the CEO of HCPL.

Qualifications & Attributes . . .

The Foundation Director will ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Communications, Marketing or related field and five years relevant experience (including fundraising, board development, capital campaigns, and special events), or equivalent combination of education, technical training and/or experience.
  • Certified Fundraising Executive certification preferred.
  • Experience building effective networks, partnerships, and/or coalitions.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency including practical experience using fundraising software and maintaining databases.
  • Flexibility to represent the Foundation at meetings and events outside the normal work day including evenings and weekends.

Candidates meeting minimum requirements will be further reviewed for:

  • Knowledge of marketing strategies and practices, including grammatical, proofreading and copy editing skills;
  • Project management proficiency;
  • Knowledge of original desk top publishing and design;
  • Organizational and planning skills with a keen focus on successful fundraising events;
  • General business acumen including comprehension of non-profit accounting, financial reporting, budgets and audits.

Compensation . . .

Compensation for the Executive Director includes a competitive base salary that is commensurate with experience and a benefit package.
