In alignment with total rewards and benefits well-being strategy, the Sr. Director of Benefits Design plays a lead role in the design and strategy of health and welfare benefit plans and programs. You will work with internal and external thought leaders to spearhead the design and communication of market-leading health and well-being benefit programs that improve quality, cost and health outcomes for our employees and their family members. This role will be responsible for leading the annual Health & Wellness benefits review and design recommendation work along with on-going monitoring and evaluation of industry trends and plan performance. Reporting to the Vice President of Health & Wellness, this role will be responsible for leading the development, evaluation, and advancement of UnitedHealth Group benefit programs including Medical, RX, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, and Voluntary Benefits.
Job Responsibilities:


Lead plan design for U.S. health and welfare programs using analytics to target and address cost containment and population health improvement opportunities.

Develop well-thought out recommendation proposals that effectively articulate the business need for benefit design changes that result in advancement of the health and well-being strategy.

Oversee M&A plan design decisions and act as a consultant to the business related to benefits strategy and cost implications during due diligence and/or integration.

Work closely with internal business partners across UnitedHealthcare and Optum to ensure plans meet business needs while remaining innovative, competitive and aligned with services and capabilities we are bringing to our members.

Collaborate closely with the compliance, administration and well-being benefits leaders and teams.

Lead and manage large, complex, cross-functional projects to achieve key business objectives.

Translate highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences.

Requirements

Qualifications:


10 or more years of health and total well-being experience

Deep knowledge of healthcare, total well-being and emerging trends in these domains

Extensive experience with consumer directed medical plans, HSAs, tiered benefits and ACOs

Familiarity with the healthcare and care delivery industries

Demonstrated experience of providing senior level recommendations with supporting business justification and cost analysis through the approval and implementation process meeting the objective of advancing a well-defined strategy forward

Experience with managing Request For Proposals (RFPs) and contracting Strong business analysis and innovative problem-solving skills

Track record of maintaining effective working relationships and influencing others at all levels of the organization

Demonstrated experience as a people manager able to develop, grow, motivate, and mentor staff to perform at their best

Knowledge and experience in all areas of benefits compliance including PPACA, ADA, IRC Section 125, HIPAA, ERISA and COBRA

Experience managing partner/vendor relationships to ensure high-quality service and cost effectiveness

Excellent project management, interpersonal, verbal & written communication, problem solving and analytical skills

Ability to resolve issues and influence in a team-based environment as well as the ability to work independently

Demonstrated experience balancing multiple priorities, performing detailed and accurate work, and meeting established deadlines

Knowledge of benefits accounting and financial business proficiency

Travel up to 25% as is needed

Enjoys working in a high volume, fast-paced, dynamic environment

Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree
Experience with configurable or flexible benefit
Familiarity with the healthcare and care delivery industries
Proficiency in data analysis using Excel, PeopleSoft and other systems skills
