Amgen is seeking a Senior Manager Information Systems (IS) – Big Data Engineering Services who will work on our Analytics and Knowledge Management (AKM) team. The Senior Manager will report to the Director of Data and Analytics and will work out of Amgen’s Capability Center in Tampa, FL. At Amgen, our mission is simple: to serve patients. The Senior Manager IS – Big Data Engineering is responsible for managing and leading the Big Data Engineering team responsible for delivery and adoption of AKM services across one or more functions. The Incumbent will support steady state Big Data and Data Lake platforms operations and critical technology services to new projects for Big Data applications. Additionally, the Senior Manager will interact frequently with IS senior management, as well as across IS organizations and IS business partners, in communicating the technology roadmap and will act as the service owner for Big Data platforms.

AKM services include Advanced Analytics and Data Integration, Big Data technology services, Information Discovery and Search, Information Architecture, Knowledge Management (KM) and Regulated Content Management.

Key Activities for the Senior Manager include:
Defines and evolves the Enterprise Data Lake and Big Data strategy and manage platform architectures and technical road maps that advance the strategy
Maintains knowledge of market trends and developments in Hadoop related tools, analytics software, and related and emerging technologies like cloud hosting services, Agile / DevOps development processes to provide, recommend, and deliver best practice solutions
Collaborates with internal customers and consulting them on best practices to effectively use Big Data platforms as a data and computing resource; providing management with best recommendations and follow up on solutions to support programming maintenance and growth to achieve strategic and operational goals
Provides operational support for the Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) platform and Big Data applications to ensure system availability per agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and implement proactive measures to reduce the number of unplanned outages

Overall management of the enterprise Hadoop and associated environments to ensure that the service delivery is cost effective and business SLAs around uptime, performance and capacity are met
Defines guidelines, standards, strategies, security policies and change management policies to support the Big Data platforms
Establishes close partnerships with other IS shared services teams (Cloud, DBA, networking, collaboration, etc.) to build an end-to-end support model for the EDL platform
Accountable for the successful delivery of large IS projects including creating and executing competitive bids, managing vendor teams and project finances, and assessing and communicating project health
Overall responsibility for the technical design, development, testing, implementation, and support of key projects implementing Big Data technologies
Advise and support project teams (project managers, architects, business analysts, and developers) on tools, technology, and methodology related to the design and development of Big Data solutions
Manages the development of new data processes and enhancing existing systems to support new requirements
Acts as an escalation point for system related technical issues
Builds a strong and cohesive team of expert Big Data and Analytics engineers who will be viewed as subject matter experts for Big Data technologies across Amgen
Manages the career development and training plans for all the team members
Plans and tracks the financial spend related to Big Data platforms and internal projects
Manages vendor relationships with various vendors as well as other niche technology providers
20% domestic travel can be expected

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 2 years of Information Systems experience
OR
Master’s degree and 6 years of Information Systems experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of Information Systems experience
OR
Associate’s degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience
OR
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Information Systems experience
AND
2 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of healthcare industry experience focused on analytics, data management, reporting or search
Hands-on experience in architecting Big Data solutions and managing delivery of large scale IS projects in Production
Hands-on experience using distributed systems like Hadoop and cloud computing like AWS
Experience in a production environment with Hadoop tools like HIVE, YARN, Zookeeper, HDFS, Impala, Kafka and SPARK
Experience and expert knowledge of AWS Cloud services like EC2, EBS, S3, RedShift, EMR, Lambda, Athena and understanding of AWS networking (VPCs) and security
Knowledge of information discovery and search technologies like Solr and Cloudera Search
Experience using reference data management platforms like SmartLogic Semaphore for terminology management and leveraging of terminologies for search quality enhancement
Experience managing the end-to-end delivery of complex data and analytics projects
Experience in traditional and contemporary high-scale analytics technologies (from RDBMS and BI reporting to visualizations)
Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
Attention to detail and ability to deal with ambiguity and change
Strong interpersonal, communication and communication skills
Penchant to learn about new technology innovation and creativity in applying to business problems
