Worst summer job story
Summer jobs always sound like fun – getting tan, making friends and earning cash. But sometimes they turn out to be very different from what you expected... Here's the winning story in our Worst Summer Jobs contest:
"This past summer of 2008 after my freshman year in college, I worked, for my second summer now, as a janitor at a local elementary school. Usually the work consists of basic janitorial services, but this summer was different because they were redoing the entire air circulation system in the building so there was construction going on in every room, and we had to work around it. But one particular week, we had to work with it.
My boss had me and another guy go around and clean up all the leftover debris from the construction going on in the classroom, which consisted of sweeping up and picking up broken tiles, old insulation, and dusty material. As we cleaned the rooms filled up with so much dust we could hardly breathe, and we weren't given any type of protective masks, only fans with open windows. At the end of the day my snot was black and my eyes were completely red and irritated.
This isn't the bad part though. I came to find out later in the week that the crap we were required to clean up was loaded with asbestos, and we were breathing it the whole time. I had to go to the doctor and get checked up, and transfer to a different school, and the man that made us clean it all up didn't even get in trouble. Yeah, I will definitely not be going back to that job next summer..."
