Accelerated Degree
A degree is closer than you think
If time is what’s keeping you from going after a life-changing college degree, you’re in luck. There are a number of programs available to help shorten your time in school, putting you closer than you think to a degree, a higher salary and greater job opportunities, all faster than you ever thought possible.
One such program is credit for work experience. If you have professional experience in an area related to your college major, you may be able to receive course credit for it. This means you won’t have to take as many courses as part of your degree program, which means you’ll graduate sooner than those without such credit.
At Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, you can earn as many as 30 credits for meeting the “learning goals” for a particular college course through your own professional work experience. Those 30 credits are the equivalent a year of full-time study, shaving half your time off of an associate’s degree program. St. Cloud Technical College in St. Cloud, Minnesota has a similar program, awarding up to one-third of your total credits in life and work experience.
Credit is also available for previous education. Many bachelor’s degree programs offer what they call accelerated options for people who have already earned associate’s degrees or 60 course credits from an accredited college. Rather than starting from scratch, your previous college work can be applied to a degree program, keeping you from having to repeat work you’ve already completed.
