Employers say 2006 summer job forecast brighter, more jobs available
SnagAJob.com Summer Job Survey indicates jobs will be easy to fill and pay is flat
Nation's #1 hourly job site to double one lucky worker's summer paycheck
RICHMOND, Va., Apr. 5, 2006 – The good news is, some of the nation's major summertime employers are doubly optimistic about the summer hiring season, predicting that they not only will have more post-Memorial Day jobs to offer but little trouble filling them as well. Unfortunately, they won't be offering higher pay rates.
According to SnagAJob.com's first summer job survey of 2006 – a poll of dozens of hiring managers at such national companies as Chuck E. Cheese®, Century Theatres® and Jiffy Lube® – summer job seekers will likely find a rosier hiring climate this year, with 84 percent of survey respondents indicating that they will have either the same number or more jobs available this summer than they did in 2005.
Even with more jobs to fill, employers are confident that there are enough summer workers to go around, which, according to Shawn Boyer, founder and CEO of SnagAJob.com, is likely to keep wages relatively flat this summer.
"The good news for summer job seekers is that this summer should be teeming with jobs," Boyer said. "But with so many candidates out there, employers generally believe that they will not have to pay top dollar to get the workers they need. If that doesn't bear out, we may start to see wages creep up later into the summer."
The SnagAJob.com survey found that only 28 percent of employers are anticipating paying summer hires more this year than they did last.
According to the survey, 16 percent of responding companies indicated that they are experiencing a decline in teenaged applicants, and 36 percent said they would be targeting older applicants this summer.
"Older workers, from recent college graduates to senior citizens, have a record of experience that is attractive to employers," Boyer said. "And very often, employers are willing to pay extra for that experience."
