Snagajob and Zogby International poll finds nine in 10 salaried workers have held hourly wage jobs

RICHMOND, Va., July 19, 2007 – A new nationwide employment study has found a conspicuous common denominator among almost all U.S. workers: At some point in their careers, more than nine in 10 Americans have worked an hourly job, and about three-quarters of them have worked for minimum wage.

The study of 3,433 employed adults was commissioned by Snagajob, the nation's leading online source of hourly jobs, and conducted by Zogby International, one of the world's most respected research companies.

Among the key findings:

  • 94% of salaried Americans have worked by the hour at some point in their career
  • 73% of those surveyed have at one time worked for minimum wage

"This survey is a resounding confirmation that America's hourly workers are the foundation of our nation's labor force," said Shawn Boyer, founder and CEO of Snagajob, the online source of more than 110,000 hourly wage jobs at any one time. "Hourly employment not only accounts for a high percentage of critical service and manufacturing jobs, but it also provides productive experience and job skills that serve workers throughout their careers."

Survey Methodology

Zogby International conducted interviews of 3,433 employed adults online. A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the U.S., was invited to participate. The online poll was conducted March 26-28, 2007. The survey's margin of error is +/- 1.7 percentage points.
