3 reasons to think about becoming a driver!

by: Kim Costa

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Schneider National outlining the reasons why a job in the trucking industry may be perfect for you!

Tired of the view from your counter or cubicle (or lack thereof)? Maybe it's time to think about launching your truck driving career.

As the U.S. economy remains sluggish and unemployment hovers near 8 percent, the trucking industry is booming with opportunities.

Here are three reasons to get behind the wheel:

1. Job security

Transportation is an industry that always has been and always will be needed. Every item in every store had to get there somehow. They were all delivered on the back of a truck. If the trucks stopped moving, the loads wouldn't be delivered. And if you went to the store to pick something up, chances are it wouldn't be there. Bottom line: As a truck driver, you will always have a job to do, and you will play a key role in keeping the country moving.

2. Variety of driving options

You can drive a tractor-trailer or haul a tank container, by yourself or with a friend. See the country as an over-the-road or team trucker or stay closer to home with a regional position. If you want to get home daily or weekly, consider a dedicated, intermodal or oil field opportunity. Choose the routes, mileage and home time schedule that work for you and your family. You can even own your own business as an owner-operator -- meaning you set your schedule and decide which loads you want to haul. The choice is yours.

3. The view

There is no view like the view from the driver's seat. From an open highway wrapping around the mountains to the sun setting behind an ocean vista, you can experience it all -- right from your office aka truck! Think about it: what other job will pay you to listen to the radio all day as you travel through the most beautiful parts of the country? Truck driving is a career like no other.

To get started on your new adventure, the first step is to find a truck driving school and get your Class A CDL. Then join a company that will help you cover the costs. For example, if you get hired at Schneider National within 60 days of graduation, you'll qualify for up to $6,000 in tuition reimbursement.

Tuition reimbursement is just one reason drivers choose Schneider. Watch this video to find your reason to drive with one of the largest trucking companies in the country.
