You may be assuming you will have a job this summer and will probably wait until after school gets out for the year before you start your search. Think again. Our research tells us that employers have already started their search for summer employees. In fact, the majority of summer hiring will be completed by May!
So, what can you do to stand out and get hired this summer?
1) Don’t just search…network! Obviously we think searching for your summer job online is one of the best ways you can go about seeing who’s hiring. But, make sure you also let all your friends and family know that you are in the job market. They may know of an opening that isn’t advertised or know of someone who is looking for some extra help. Turn your job search into a team effort. Your network can pick you up when things slow down and cheer you on when things go your way.
2) Don’t leave you apps hanging - How would you feel if someone asked you for a favor and got mad at you for not doing it…when they didn’t even remind you once? A common job search mistake is thinking you are done with applying once you click “submit.” You’re not finished yet! The next step is to follow up on your applications. Not sure exactly what to do when you follow up? No worries, we break it down for you in a video.
3) Don’t start slacking - The weather has finally warmed up and all you want to do is go out and lay at the beach/pool. I get it, really. But, take time to search/apply/follow up each day. It would be nice if someone just came to your door and offered you a job, but that probably won’t happen. You have to work for it. You can start slacking before your start date or on a day off. The only difference would be that you can go out and spend your hard-earned cash on the days you want to relax.
It’s a competitive job market right now and you want to do everything you can to stand out and get noticed. Follow these three “don’ts” and it will bring you closer to nailing that perfect summer job. Comment below to keep us posted on how your summer job search is going and good luck!
