Ever made a bad call? You’re not alone

by: Kim Costa

We all make mistakes, some worse than others. However, for most of us, our mistakes aren’t shown to millions and millions of people.

In Monday night’s football game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, the final call, which changed the outcome of the game, is being contested by fans and players as a really bad call. I won’t get into all the specific details here, but you can read about it here.

Have you ever made a really bad call while job searching? I’ve put together a list of some of the ones we hear about the most.

Bad calls in your job search:

  • Wearing washed-out ripped jeans to an interview
  • Showing up late to your interview
  • Misspelling your name on an application
  • Copying and pasting your cover letter, and not changing the company name
  • Bashing your former boss on Facebook and not making your profile private
  • Tweeting that you really didn’t like the person that interviewed you – #badcall
  • Not cancelling the interview if you had surgery that morning
  • Having a full voicemail box so employers can’t reach you
  • Not turning your phone on silent for an interview, made worse by your “Call me maybe” ringtone

What bad calls have you made? Could you imagine doing something that embarrassing and having it broadcast across the world?

    LOL!
My friend did this before when she was working at Pizza Hut, maybe like a week later when she told me her boss fired her and brought that up along with it I was literally rolling on the floor laughing! Still remember that day like it was yesterday.

Anyways, thanks snagajob. I haven’t got a job yet, but when I do I’ll definitely tell you guys about it :)

When I have to apply for a job I am always asked for a password. I give them what I know as far as checking my e-mail and that will not work. Why let me pick my own password and not keep resetting it time and time again

    Hi Kim Kovac,

How about giving your cell phone number as your main contact number and not having a voice mail set up on it?
I have one of those free cell phones from the government and have not set up a voice mail. However, this is the number to contact me during the day. I use to have a voice mail and some how it got taken off and I have been able to reset it.
Would you say this is an important thing to have set up?

When I was in high school, I made two of these mistakes. Not exactly ripped jeans or anything, but I wasn’t dressed appropriately for the interview. And of course I was about 10 minutes late to the interview. Needless to say, I didn’t get hired.

Hi Herb! That’s a tough one. If you are absolutely certain you will answer the phone when they call then it’s okay. But, you need to be careful when you answer the phone, if you’re in a crowded area or driving it may be distracting to you and the employer. If they call you and you don’t answer and a voice mail can’t be left you may frustrate them into not calling you back. My advice is to get the voicemail back. Let me know if you have any questions.
