Building dreams, one hour at a time

by: Amy White

Sheena jeffers is working toward her dreamEach of us is working for a dream. The one that keeps you going; the thing you think about when it feels like you can’t take another minute of your job. Big or small, those dreams keep us getting up and going to work on the days when going back to bed seems way more rewarding than a paycheck.

One of our Snagajob users recently shared the dream she’s working toward. We were so touched we wanted to share it with all of you: Sheena is working two hourly jobs to achieve her dream of opening a dance studio that helps empower homeless children. I’ll let her tell you about it herself:

“I’ve always known my dream: To be a dance educator, and one day open my own studio. A month before I was scheduled to graduate, I started job searching using Web sites (including snagajob!) I went into the job search with 2 goals:

1) Full-time job

2) Benefits (with a focus in health insurance).

That was it. I was willing to go get coffee, make copies, answer phones, travel, whatever! I knew if I could get a job to take care of my bills – and allow me to save, even just a bit, I could work on achieving my dream stress free. I landed a job with an attorney (with zero law experience); then, I landed a job as a dance teacher at night. I began to live dual lives: 40 hours = paralegal, 20 hours = dance instructor. I wear ballet clothes under professional business attire, but I was determined to get business experience while getting teaching experience. I chipped away at school loans and credit cards. I created a “Dream” account and began saving money each month to deposit into my Dream account.

My plan is to have a key to my own studio in my own hand by 2015. But one thing is clear: I wouldn’t be where I am today without my jobs.

I clock in and out every day knowing: I’m doing this for a reason that is so much bigger than a single day. I’m doing this for my future and for my dream. Hourly jobs make dreams possible, and I’m living proof.”

Sheena, your wonderful attitude and determined spirit are an inspiration! To help you on you way, we’ll be giving you $250 toward your studio dream. Stay in touch, and let us know how it goes!

Do you have a dream? What are you working for? Big or small, we’d really love to hear about it.

I am so unbelievably touched by Snagajob’s kindness, after all they have already done for me! Your support and influence in my life and the community is unparalleled! “Thank you” is not a strong enough to convey how I feel!

This post just made my otherwise crappy day. Thank you so much!
